Events Recap Brenda Gould Memorial Tournament On Sunday, 7/2, EWGA Columbia held the first Brenda Gould Memorial Tournament at Northwoods Golf Course. We will always remember the annual post-tournament pool parties we had at Brenda’s house, but our traditional July 4th flag tournament took on a new meaning this time as we honored our friend. Through the sale of custom tournament towels and mulligans, we raised $700 for SCOA (South Carolina Oncology Associates) to be donated in Brenda’s memory. We had a great turnout and after play, most of the group went to Top Dawg Tavern for dinner. EWGA Championship Carolinas Semi-Finals 2017 EWGA Championship Carolinas Semi-Finals were held on Saturday, July 15, in Shallotte, NC at Rivers Edge Golf Course, a truly beautiful layout. Although the heat made a tough course even more challenging, our chapter performed well, with many placing in the medals. [See Scoreboard below] Top honors in both the Championship Flight and the Scramble Division were taken by Columbia, with Lynn Humphrey taking the Championship medal, and the team of Dee Dailey, Teresa Broome, Char Briggs, and Beverly Broome placing first in the Scramble. Congratulations to all our winners and best of luck to these five ladies who will be travelling to Hot Springs, Arkansas for Nationals in October.

Social Corner Lexington Blowfish Baseball On July 20, the Third Thursday social was held at the Lexington Blowfish Baseball game. A storm went through shortly before game time and cooled it down a bit, which made a great night even better. One of the early highlights of the evening was when our very own President, Lynn Humphrey, threw out the ceremonial first pitch – and don’t you know - it was a perfect strike. Our group of ten enjoyed this different spin on the Third Thursday social.
Rules Review This month, the rules spotlight is on pace of play. Rule 6-7 for “Undue Delay; Slow Play” states “The player must play without undue delay and in accordance with any pace of play guidelines”. We play ready-golf, which helps some, but see below for some ideas on how we can do even more. Ways to Improve Pace of Play 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8.
Move promptly: Go to your ball as soon as possible and prepare for your turn to hit Pre-shot routine: Keep routine short - limit your practice swings to 1-2 Play promptly: Once it’s your turn, hit your shot within 30 seconds (includes time determining distance) Be prepared: If walking/leaving your cart, take extra clubs and balls with you, just in case Cart sharing: Drop cart partner off or park between both players’ balls, so both can get ready to hit On the green: Read your putt while others are putting, so you’ll be ready to go when it’s your turn Finish on the green: If you are close to the hole after your first putt - don’t mark, finish the short putt Move on: Write down scores at the next tee, instead of taking time at the hole just finished
We all have experienced slow play. We all wish it did not exist. Most of us see it as something someone else needs to fix. The fact is that nobody wants to play a 5 or 6 hour round, especially in the heat we get around Columbia. It’s everyone’s responsibility to keep up with the group ahead of you. If you aren’t hitting, you should be preparing for your next turn. If we all try to become just a little bit more efficient with our time on the course, the collective result would make our rounds shorter and get us to the clubhouse just a little quicker.
