Events Recap Dixie Cup 2017 On August 12-13, the 2017 Dixie Cup, the 17th edition of the annual event, was held at the Sevierville Golf Club in Sevierville, TN. This year the competition was expanded to 2 days of Match Play between the Carolinas (EWGA members from SC, NC, and Virginia) and the Heart of the South (HOTS) (EWGA members from Georgia, Alabama, and Louisiana). A shotgun start on Day 1 was delayed due to heavy rain, but once the rain stopped, it stayed away long enough to allow the completion of the first day’s rounds on the River Course. After Day 1, the HOTS side held the lead in the matches, but the Carolinas teams fought back in Day 2’s rounds which were held on the Highlands Course. With only one match left on the course, the 2 sides were tied, but that last match was won by the HOTS, and with it they took the Dixie Cup for 2017. Until next year… Par 3 Challenge The last Saturday in August, we held our first Par 3 Challenge at Par Tee Driving Range in West Columbia. The Par 3 holes were each setup with 4 tees and a couple of pin options, so we were able to play a total of 12 holes, ranging from 57 to 147 yards, in just under 2 hours. It was a fun time that added a little variety to our normal stroke play rounds. After play, the group met for brunch at Yesterday’s in Five Points – a nice ending to a great morning.

Social Corner Old Chicago Pizza and Tap Room On August 17, the Third Thursday social was held at the Old Chicago Pizza and Tap Room, one of the newer restaurants in the Vista area. We are always searching for new/different places to try for Third Thursday socials, so be on the lookout.
Rules Review This month, the rules spotlight is on the Unplayable Ball rule – Rule 28. The bottom line for this one is that the player may declare her ball unplayable at any time, unless the ball is in a water hazard. Although this declaration comes with a one stroke penalty, this option may prevent a big number in the end. See below for details of this rule. Rule 28 – Ball Unplayable The player may deem his ball unplayable at any place on the course, except when the ball is in a water hazard. The player is the sole judge as to whether his ball is unplayable. If the player deems his ball to be unplayable, he must, under penalty of one stroke: a.
Proceed under the stroke and distance provision of Rule 27-1 by playing a ball as nearly as possible at the spot from which the original ball was last played (see Rule 20-5); or
b.
Drop a ball behind the point where the ball lay, keeping that point directly between the hole and the spot on which the ball is dropped, with no limit to how far behind that point the ball may be dropped; or
c.
Drop a ball within two club-lengths of the spot where the ball lay, but not nearer the hole.
If the unplayable ball is in a bunker, the player may proceed under choice a, b or c. If he elects to proceed under choice b or c, a ball must be dropped in the bunker. When proceeding under this Rule, the player may lift and clean the ball or substitute a ball.
