Events Recap EWGA Championship Finals On Oct 4-8, the EWGA Championship Finals were held in Hot Springs, Arkansas. Representing the Columbia Chapter were Lynn Humphrey (Championship flight) and the team of Dee Dailey, Teresa Broome, Char Briggs, and Beverly Broome (Scramble division). They all did great in the two-day competition, with the Scramble Team placing 5th and Lynn placing 8th. Between rounds the ladies found time for local attractions. Some enjoyed visits to the bath houses to experience the healing powers of the hot springs. They also spent some time at the Ohio Club, a bar which opened in 1905 and had famous (or infamous) clientele such as Al Capone and Babe Ruth. Sounds like this was a nice location all-around for a tournament.
Member/Member - Cobblestone Golf Course We had 26 members sign up for Member/Member 2017 at Cobblestone Golf Course on October 15. Cobblestone is one of our favorite courses and we had an awesome weather day to enjoy it. Two-person teams competed in a round of 9 holes scramble / 9 holes best ball. After play, we all met in the clubhouse grill for awards and a nice grilled chicken salad and some cold beverages. Prizes were awarded for top net scores overall, and top in both scramble and best ball. See Scoreboard section below for winners.

Social Corner Publico Kitchen and Tap On October 19, we had our Thirsty Third Thursday social at Publico Kitchen and Tap in 5 Points. Publico, with a menu featuring Lat-Asian offerings and many craft beers, opened 2 years ago, but this was our first visit to the location. Our group of eight enjoyed the fresh menu options, featuring various types of tacos. It was yet another great opportunity to enjoy a nice evening with friends.

Rules Review This month’s rules spotlight is on the advice rule. In casual rounds, we sometimes voice opinions on what our playing partners should do or what we would do in a given situation. If we are in a tournament, we must be very careful with our opinions, so that we don’t incur a penalty or cause one for someone else. See below for the USGA rule and some examples where the rule could come into play. 8-1. Advice During a stipulated round, a player must not: a. give advice to anyone in the competition playing on the course other than his partner b. ask for advice from anyone other than his partner or either of their caddies. Penalty for Breach of Rule: Match play - Loss of hole; Stroke play - Two strokes.
Scenarios – ok under Advice rule 8-1 1) A player asks her opponent or fellow-competitor the distance from one object (e.g. her ball) to another object (e.g. the putting green). [The distance between any objects is considered to be a matter of public information and therefore not advice] 2) Player B asks her fellow-competitor (Player A) what club she just hit for her tee shot. [Player B had already played her tee shot, so this not considered asking for advice] Scenarios – in breach of Advice rule 8-1 1) Player B asks her fellow-competitor (Player A) what club she just hit for her tee shot. [Player B has not played her tee shot, yet, so this is considered asking for advice] 2) Player A has a questionable lie. Player B says “You don’t have a shot – take an unplayable”. [Player B is guilty of giving advice]
