Events Recap EWGA Cup Atlantic Qualifier On Sept 9-10, in Cape Charles, VA, Columbia was represented by 2 8-person teams in the Atlantic Qualifier for the 2017 EWGA Cup Match Play Competition. Although neither team placed high enough to advance to Finals, both teams finished in the top ten and enjoyed a weekend of golf on a great course by the Chesapeake Bay.
Ponderosa Field Day Tournament On Sept 23, at Ponderosa Golf Course in Leesville, SC, we held a Field Day Tournament, with prizes available for Closest-to-the-Pin on all Par 3s and Longest Drive in both the High and Low Handicap Divisions. A couple of former EWGA Columbia members who belong to the Ponderosa Golf Club joined us for a hot, but fun day of golf. After play, we all met in the clubhouse grill for awards. Social Corner Carolina Ale House On September 21, the Third Thursday social was held at the Carolina Ale House in the Vista. We had good group – some monthly regulars, and a couple of folks joining the social for the first time. The weather allowed us to enjoy our food and drink at one of the outdoor rooftop tables, so that was a welcome bonus.

Rules Review This month’s rules spotlight is on the Provisional Ball rule, which can be invoked when the original ball is believed to be lost (not in a water hazard) or out of bounds. 27-2. Provisional Ball a. Procedure Situation: player’s ball 1) may be lost outside a water hazard or 2) may be out of bounds To save time the player may play another ball provisionally in accordance with Rule 27-1. The player must both: (i)
announce to her playing partner her intention to play a provisional ball and
(ii)
play the provisional ball before she or her playing partner goes forward to search for the original ball
If a player fails to meet the above requirements prior to playing another ball, that ball is not a provisional ball and becomes the ball in play under penalty of stroke and distance(Rule 27-1); the original ball is lost. b. When Provisional Ball Becomes Ball in Play The player may play a provisional ball until she reaches the place where the original ball is likely to be. If she makes a stroke with the provisional ball from the place where the original ball is likely to be or from a point nearer the hole than that place, the original ball is lost and the provisional ball becomes the ball in play under penalty of stroke and distance (Rule 27-1). If the original ball is lost outside a water hazard or is out of bounds, the provisional ball becomes the ball in play, under penalty of stroke and distance (Rule 27-1).
Exception: If it is known or virtually certain that the original ball, that has not been found, has been moved by an outside agency (Rule 18-1), or is in an obstruction (Rule 24-3) or an abnormal ground condition (Rule 25-1c), the player may proceed under the applicable Rule. c. When Provisional Ball to be Abandoned If the original ball is neither lost nor out of bounds, the player must abandon the provisional ball and continue playing the original ball. If it is known or virtually certain that the original ball is in a water hazard, the player may proceed in accordance with Rule 26-1. In either situation, if the player makes any further strokes at the provisional ball, he is playing a wrong ball and the provisions of Rule 15-3 apply. Note: If a player plays a provisional ball under Rule 27-2a, the strokes made after this Rule has been invoked with a provisional ball are subsequently abandoned under Rule 27-2c and penalties incurred solely by playing that ball are disregarded.
