Be Yourself For God Rabbi Joseph Liebermann describes a dream where he dies and goes to stand before God’s judgment seat. As he waits, the rabbi fears that the Lord will ask him, “Why weren’t you a Moses … or a David ... or a Solomon?” Instead, God surprises him by simply asking, “Why weren’t you Rabbi Liebermann?” When our lives are over, God won’t ask us why we weren’t a Mother Teresa or another saintly soul. He simply wants us to be who he created us to be. “We are his workmanship,” St. Paul writes in Ephesians 2:10. In Greek, workmanship means “a piece of art.” You are God’s masterpiece. Life isn’t a game of comparison. It’s a journey of discovery of how God has uniquely created you to perform specific tasks in this life. Your life is God’s canvas. Don’t hinder the painting process! —Mike Paulison

GUEST PREACHER: Dr. MIKE LEATHERWOOD 10:00 am: SUNDAY SCHOOL 11:00 am: WORSHIP in the SHELTER 12:00 pm: HOMECOMING MEAL in the FAMILY LIFE CENTER Mike, Theresa, Chad and Leticia were at our church in the mid to late 70’s. Please invite your families to join us on this day and especially your children that were attending during this time. Also, we would like to have someone donate flowers for the alter in honor or memory of someone. If you would like to do this, please let Cammie Chapman know.
Pastor’s Pen This month, Hill’s Chapel will celebrate its annual Homecoming service. I always looked forward to Homecoming when I was growing up. It was good to see people that had moved away, even if “moved away” meant just a few miles down the road. If they wound up at a different church, you missed them every Sunday. And, of course, it wouldn’t be Homecoming without a bunch of tables somehow not collapsing underneath mountains of food, now would it?? One Homecoming I particularly remember was in 1976. It was the nation’s Bicentennial and as part of our celebration everyone was encouraged to dress up in Colonial dress. Well, the thread and needle came out in many households, and Colonial dresses and frock coats and men’s breeches were made out of old clothes or scrap material. There was even a powdered wig or two! I still remember two old belt buckles were turned into decorations for my shoe tops. The local farmers that still had horse-drawn carts got them out and drove them to church - maybe not a surrey with the fringe on top, but still a sight to see! That was a Homecoming to remember. I can’t tell you the name of the preacher or what the sermon was about or even anything we sang. I can’t remember what we had to eat - though I can guarantee you there would've been at least half a dozen different forms of fried chicken, the same number of mashed potatoes, green beans and casseroles, and twice as many bowls of home-made biscuits. But what I do remember is how much fun it was because everyone had made the effort to dress up a bit and have some fun while we worshipped the God who gives us life and joy. And I’m sure God was smiling too! This September, do something a little special for God. It doesn’t have to be a powdered wig and horse-drawn cart. Maybe take some of your free time and go for a walk and just share that walk with God. Maybe buy yourself a new Bible, or just pick up one that’s been on your shelf too long, and read it from beginning to end. (I recently came across my old children’s Bible, so that’s the next one on my list to read!). Or maybe you can take on something for God, or give something up that is keeping you from God - we don’t have to wait for Lent to do that! But do something a little extra for God, and then share what you did with others. Let’s encourage one another in our faith - I believe that’s mentioned in the Bible. :) Have a fun September, and share that joy in God! Love Sean
