Al-Anon Meetings So You Love an Alcoholic Take Courage; There is Hope Don’t wait to seek help. Anyone who has suffered from the effects of someone else’s drinking faces constant emotional strains and pressures, and needs help in relieving these. You will find relief, understanding, support, and warmhearted help in an Al-Anon Family Group. There you will, as one member put it, “learn to live again.” The Al-Anon Family Groups are a fellowship of relatives and friends of alcoholics who share their experience, strength, and hope in order to solve their common problems. We believe alcoholism is a family illness and that changed attitudes can aid recovery. Al-Anon is not allied with any sect, denomination, political entity, organization, or institution; does not engage in any controversy; neither endorses nor opposes any cause. There are no dues for membership. Al-Anon is self-supporting through its own voluntary contributions. Al-Anon has but one purpose: to help families of alcoholics. We do this by practicing the Twelve Steps, by welcoming and giving comfort to families of alcoholics, and by giving understanding and encouragement to the alcoholic. Join us! Friday’s at 10 a.m. Hill’s Chapel United Methodist Church Family Life Center 988 South Highway 16, Stanley, NC 28164

United Methodist Women The Parade of Tables in September was a big success. The ladies did an awesome job of decorating beautiful and unique tables. Thanks to all of you for your hard work. A big thanks to Shannon Parker for always making our food table so pretty and to Lea Anne Cansler for making our programs. There were so many delicious salads and we tried to enjoy them all! Our speaker was witty and inspirational and enjoyed by everyone. We cleared over $600.00. Our goal is not to make a lot of money but to set aside a day for Christian ladies to come together to have a good time. Our next Supper will be Tuesday, November 14th. There will be no supper in December. We made $420.00 on our supper in October. Hope to see you on Tuesday in November. Mae Goff, Pres.

Pastor’s Pen With apologies to Robert Preston… Trouble! My friends, we got trouble! That starts with T, and that stands for…tornado!!! Twice in my life now, I’ve been close to a tornado. I’ve yet to actually see one – the first was at night, and the one in October was nearly 3 miles away – but that’s close enough! We got off very lightly, just some barn damage and a few limbs and trees down. Nothing major to the house, didn’t lose power, just some time hiding in the basement and then on with our lives. Just up the hill, though, it was slightly different. Many trees down, fence lines destroyed, power out for days, roads closed. But despite all the damage and chaos, as of the time of this writing I have yet to hear of a single injury to a person (or cow!). Thank you, God! T also stands for Thanksgiving. And every year, on the 4th Thursday of November, we as a nation take a day to thank God for all our many blessings. (Our Canadian sisters and brothers already had theirs in October!) Sometimes, we find it very easy to see all the tornadoes in our lives and not so easy to see all the blessings. But try to imagine how different (better!) life would be if we started an “equal time rule” where we spent as much time being thankful as we do being stressed and worried! Let’s start with a day, shall we? This Thanksgiving, as you gather with family or friends, or enjoy the pleasantness of your own company, take some time to thank God for all the joys and blessings and honors in your life. Invite everyone to name one blessing before you dive into your feast that your table is struggling not to collapse under! And invite God to share in that day. And then do it again in December. In January, do it on two days. Then three days another month. Then four…you get the picture. Develop a habit of thanksgiving that makes it a part of every day – thanksgiving to God, and thanksgiving for those who make your life so much better just for being part of it. I thank God for each of you. I am so glad to be here, and I love each one of you. Have a blessed – and thankful – Thanksgiving!
