The Hill’s Chapel House Call May 2017
Hilltopper Report The Hilltoppers will go to Everest for lunch on Wednesday, May 17th at 11:00 a.m. We hope you can join us. We will plan some short trips for the coming months, so look for that information. Everyone is welcome to join us at any time. Mae Goff, Georgia Stephens
United Methodist Women The lunch at church in April was wonderful. If you were there you know how delicious that food was. There were 90 people who attended. A Big thanks to Shannon Parker and Julie Ballard for preparing the meal for us. We will have more lunches just not sure we can get these ladies to cook for us. We made $2,500.00 and that money went to the budget. The regular Tuesday night supper was also a success and this was a love offering for Kristen Dickson. May 9th will be our last supper until September. Please join us for food and fellowship. Have a great summer. Mae Goff
A Taste of God’s Love In Lost in Wonder, Love and Praise (Abingdon Press), John Killinger describes a mother’s love — and how it offers a tiny foretaste of God’s love: “It is stronger than steel, softer than down and more resilient than a green sapling on the hillside. It closes wounds, melts disappointments and enables the weakest child to stand tall and straight in the fields of adversity. I believe that this love, even at its best, is only a shadow of the love of God, a dark reflection of all that we can expect of him, both in this life and the next.”

Trustee News 1. The Fire Marshal came to inspect the Church buildings in March. There were four infractions that had to be corrected. Those corrections have been made and the yearly inspection is complete.

2. Church members have seen the ballfield lights on at various times from 4:30 pm to 3:00 am. The solution reached was to put up a combination lock box and a key will be placed in the lock box. Only one key will be in the lock box. Those who use the key will be given the combination and take responsibility to turn the lights off and return the key to the lock box.
3. This year we will also have the ball field lights disconnected on November 1, 2017, and reconnected in March, 2018. Please Note: Disconnecting the ball field lights means there will be no lights for the walking track or the Shelter area. The lights in the parking lots will continue to work.
4. The following recommendation was made by the Trustee Committee and approved by the Administrative Council on April 20, 2017: On Sundays from 8:30 am – 2:00 pm, the Hill’s Chapel Campus will be used for Worship and Church functions only. After 2:00 pm, the outdoor facilities only are available for use by others. This change will also be added into our Policies and Guidelines of Church Buildings and Facilities.
5. The Church lawn has been fertilized, limed and grass seeds sown. The pothole driving into the Church parking lot from Glover Lane has been repaired. The faucet water pressure in the main FLC kitchen sink has been repaired.

Pastor’s Pen Two days after I write this, the Publishers Clearing House Prize Patrol will show up on someone’s doorstep and tell them they have won $7,000 a week. For life. For those counting at home, that’s $1,000 a day. For life. Can you imagine?? I’ve heard a number of you say that if you ever came into some money, the church would get that new sanctuary. Or the budget would be paid. Or you’d go back to school. Some even admitted there might be some traveling! What would you do if you suddenly had more than enough money? According to a program I once saw, the happy medium for an American income was $77,000/year. Less than this and we were worried about where the next bill payment was coming from. More than this and we might find ourselves with different problems. I suspect that most of you reading this don’t have to worry too much about what those potential problems from having too much money would be! But we can imagine: friends and family that think we “owe” them or that all they have to do is ask and whatever they want will be handed over. Thinking we have so much money that we overspend even that. (There is a long-standing theory that our expenses grow to meet our income, however high that becomes.) Or we may not realize the gift we have been given. A friend of a friend of a friend won a major prize from the NC Lottery, more than enough to be set for life (and then some). She took the lump sum...and went on a spending spree. On the other side are those who think $1,000 a month is a whole pile of money. The bills never seem to stop coming. Expenses get cut only to have a new one show up. Or maybe we just don’t want to spend anything, putting everything in the bank and leaving it there. Someone here at Hill’s tells the story of sitting behind someone in worship, and when this person opens his wallet they make a creaking door sound. In England, the counties of Yorkshire and Lancashire have a long history of rivalry. And they have a joke, told to fit the teller, that goes: What is the difference between a Yorkshireman and a Lancashireman? When a Yorkshireman opens his wallet, moths fly out. When a Lancashireman opens his, the moths are dead.
So...what’s the point of all this rambling about money, too much or too little. It is no mistake that Jesus spoke more about money than any other single subject. He made it clear that money was not the problem but what it can do to us. So I would like for you to do some very simple things, whether you live on $1,000 a day or $1,000 a month. The first is, please pray for the person that won the $7,000 a week. Too much money can be worse than too little, so pray for God’s guidance and good friends. Second, examine your own relationship with your bank account. Do you control the money, or does the money control you? And where is God in all that? And third, if you need help, please let me know. That help may be needing money to pay a power bill. Or it may be debt counseling. Or maybe you would like to get on a strict budget. (Do you know how many Americans save anything for retirement? It is shockingly low.) But whatever it may be, let me know. If the church can’t help, we can find someone who can. We are more than a community of believers, we are the family of God. Oh, and if you just won the grand prize: go read Deuteronomy 6.4-12. Every blessing, Sean
