Christian Symbol Door: A door symbolizes our invitation to engage in prayer and personal relationship with Jesus: “Knock and the door will be opened to you” (Matthew 7:7, NIV). Conversely, a door represents Jesus’ desire to be invited into our lives and hearts: “I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me” (Revelation 3:20, NIV).

The Beauty of Growing Old “How beautifully leaves grow old,” wrote 19th-century essayist John Burroughs. “How full of light and color are their last days.” Society doesn’t think highly of old age. Beauty products tout the supposed virtues of maintaining a youthful appearance. Older adults’ wisdom, born of much life experience, is often disparaged, ignored or not sought. But God says this about the righteous, whose lives are rooted in him: “In old age they still produce fruit; they are always green and full of sap, showing that the LORD is upright” (Psalm 92:14-15, NRSV). The aging leaves of autumn can prompt us to look for beauty in the seniors among us, to notice the light and color that still abound. From all the fruit they still produce — service, prayer, love — may we learn about living faithfully until our own last days. —Heidi Mann

Pastor’s Pen I was door shopping today. Easy, right? Well, let’s see… Steel, fiberglass, or wood? Solid or with windows? Small window or large? Opaque or see-through? Built-in blinds? Partitioned or one pane? Paneled or flat? Oh, you want a peep hole in that? Doors are very useful things. They keep the air conditioning in. Soon, they will keep the heat in. They keep the bugs out. They keep the rain out. And they can even keep out people you didn’t want to see! (Unless you open the door before checking who it was, in which case you’re stuck.) My doors have problems. They don’t keep the bugs or the rain out, which means they aren’t keeping the A/C or the heat in. You see, they have gaps around them, especially at the bottom. These doors weren’t quite the right size for the frames. But as someone said recently, “There’s nothing wrong with the house that money can’t fix!” And so, we will be spending some money. There’s something else about doors. They are welcoming things. I remember every time I went home, I couldn’t wait to see that front door. And it would open, and there you would be – home! Family and friends, good food, all you had to do was walk right in. If it was night, you could come down the road and see the lights on inside. Jesus described himself as the door (John 10). There is no cost for using this door, He has already paid it! He doesn’t want to keep anyone out, just let everyone in. And sometimes He even comes to our door, as in Revelation when He says, “Behold I stand at the door and knock.” As the nights get longer and the weather gets cooler and our doors stay shut more, remember those who do not have doors that will close, or cannot afford to replace those that leak. Remember those who cannot afford to turn up the heat or to buy firewood. On Saturday, October 8th, we will have our next Missional Network work day. Don’t be a stranger! People of any skill level are needed, both at the work sites and to help with food or other preparations. Some people even come just to talk, and Methodists are sure good at talking! And all of us will be praying for this day and all people involved. We will meet at 8 a.m. at Tucker’s Grove UMC on Hwy 73 for a biscuit breakfast and then be sent out – or stay there. There is plenty of work to be done, and this is an amazing way to share God’s love with our brothers and sisters in our own community. The door is open, and Jesus is waiting. Will you walk through?
