LADIES FOOTBALL

U14A WEST CORK FINAL Valley Rovers 3-9 to Bandon 2-13 The Ladies Football U14A team, lost out by a single point, in a dramatic West Cork final against Bandon last Sunday evening in Clonakilty. In a game that had everything the girls were defeated by a last minute free and ended up the wrong side of a result that their

performance did not deserve. Valleys played with the breeze in the first half but it was Bandon who dominated the early stages with the first three points. The girls began to get into the game after 10 minutes with a couple of points from Orla O’Sullivan, and then Kate Lynch burst forward from midfield to score a terrific goal with a shot from 20 metres. The team knew that they needed to build a good lead playing with the breeze and pushed on more. Two further points from Orla and points from Ellen Murphy and Caoimhe McCarthy extended the lead. A terrific run by team captain Niamh Crowley took her deep into the Bandon half and her shot on goal rebounded to Laoise Collins to finish to the net, leaving the half time Score at Valley Rovers 2-6 Bandon 0-4. Turning round into the breeze the girls managed the elements well and two more points from Orla O’Sullivan and a goal from Lucy Callanan extended the lead further with 20 minutes left. Bandon re-organised at this stage and changed to a more direct approach, but the girls defended heroically to limit the goal chances. However the referee was beginning to penalise Valleys more regularly now for debatable frees and Bandon were able to add two more points from frees and goal from a penalty. The wind was now much stronger than the first half, and Valleys were now struggling to get out of their half to lift the pressure and with Bandon consistently being awarded scorable frees, they were narrowing the gap slowly but surely. Aisling Fennelly was able to tag on a point with 5 minutes left but Bandon had narrowed the gap to four points with 3 minutes left. Then a deflected Bandon shot towards goal was pushed on to the post and cleared but the umpires controversially deemed that the ball had just crossed the line and awarded the goal to level the scores. Bandon won the kick out and the referee awarded another free close in which Bandon scored, and soon after the final whistle blew, to bring heartbreak to the girls. Bandon are to be commended too for their part in a

superb game but the defeat was so difficult to take. Bandon scored 1-10 from a penalty and frees and this only highlighted how unfortunate they were to lose and the result did not reflect the team performance.

another point by Ellen Murphy, brought Valleys right back into it and left the half time score at Bandon 1-5 Valleys 1-2. The second half was hard fought and scores were at a premium, but was great advert for ladies football. Bandon scored the first point of the half, but Lucy Callanan went through at the other end, and as she shot for goal the referee blew for a Valleys free just as the ball hit the back of the net and disallowed it. Ellen Murphy pointed from the subsequent free. Lucy was not to be denied however as five minutes later she scored a goal which brought the sides level. It remained like this until the last 5 minutes when Bandon scored a goal and a point, but Ella Ronan drilled a terrific shot into the net which reduced the advantage to one point again.

Team: Oonagh Hayes, Alison Kenny, Aisling O’Donovan, Rhian Dawkins, Aine Ryan, Molly Lynch, Niamh Crowley, Laoise Collins (1-0), Kate Lynch (1-0), Orla O’Sullivan (0-6), Aisling Fennelly (0-1), Ellen Murphy (0-1), Caoimhe McCarthy (0-1), Lucy Callanan (1-0), Ellie O’Sullivan. Subs: Grace O’Dwyer, Siobhan Lordan, Leanne Murphy, Hannah Morrissey, Maebh O’Sullivan, Sarah Kenny, Tara Gilli.

Despite the girls trying everything in the last few minutes they could not break down the Bandon defence and the final whistle brought heartbreak for the team despite a superb spirited performance by the team.

U14C WEST CORK FINAL Valley Rovers 3-3 to Bandon 2-7 The Ladies U14B team went down to a one point defeat to Bandon in the West Cork U14C Final last Saturday night in Dunmanway. The girls got off to a slow start and conceded 1-1 in the first five minutes. The team which was primarily comprised of U13 players against an older and physically stronger Bandon side, looked in for a long night, but a point by Ellen Murphy settled the nerves. Bandon pushed on again and tagged on another three points and a superb save by goalkeeper Emma Kelly kept Valleys in it. A goal from Sarah Kenny and
