Game Notes FIRST PITCH Gettysburg takes on the Swarthmore College Garnet in a Centennial Conference doubleheader this afternoon. The two sides will play a pair of nine-inning games. ALL-TIME SERIES The Bullets hold a 36-18 lead over Swarthmore in the all-time series that dates back to 1922. It has been a very evenly-played series in recent years, with the two sides splitting the last 12 games since 2011. PROJECT ALS DAY Between games this afternoon, Gettysburg will hold a “Take ALS Yard Day” ceremony in support of Project ALS, a support group dedicated to raising funds for research and awareness of this disease. The initiative is held on behalf of the families of Tom Kirchhoff and Robert Borman, friends of the Gettysburg College baseball program who passed away after battling ALS. Kirchhoff, who passed away in March of 2015 after a four-year battle with ALS, was the son of Bill ’63 and Jean Kirchhoff ’64. The family has been a generous supporter of the baseball team, and Gettysburg’s home field is named after them. Borman, the father of former Gettysburg baseball player Rob Borman ’05, passed away in October of 2014 after a year-long fight with ALS. The Borman family has also been a generous supporter of the baseball team and is recognized with a plaque outside the visiting team bullpen here at Kirchhoff Field. Three years ago, former Bullet captain Nate Simon ’14 started the team’s “Take ALS Yard” fundraiser, which has raised over $50,000 and is now organized by senior J.J. Lucido. The team has sold hats and tee-shirts throughout the year at the table next to the home bleachers, and donations are also accepted online at takealsyard.com. LAST TIME OUT Dickinson jumped to a 5-0 first-inning lead and Gettysburg was unable to recover, falling 9-2 in a Centennial Conference tilt here at Kirchhoff Field this past Tuesday. The Red Devils would build an 8-0 lead by the seventh inning before freshman Dominick Gasparro put the Bullets on the scoreboard in the bottom of the frame with his second home run of the season, belting a two-run shot. Junior Chuck Probst went 2-for-4 with a double for the Bullets while freshman Joe Giovinco also finished with a pair of hits for Gettysburg. Sophomore Will Wortmann had the longest outing out of the Bullets five pitchers, tossing 4 1/3 innings of relief while allowing just one run. He struck out a season-high six batters.

LAST SEASON VERSUS SWARTHMORE The Bullets won both ends of a Centennial Conference doubleheader versus Swarthmore here at Kirchhoff Field last season, winning the 9-6 in the opener and 9-4 in the nightcap. Rich Power and Chase Stopyra each turned in a quality start on the mound for the Bullets, with Power earning the victory in the opener, allowing just two earned runs and scattering 12 hits over eight innings. Stopyra worked 6 1/3 innings in the nightcap, holding the Garnet to three runs on eight hits. Gettysburg’s Nos. 1-2 hitters in the lineup had a big date at the plate, as leadoff hitter Luke Lawrence ’16 went 4-for-7 with four runs scored while Logan Sneed was 5-for-10 with five runs. Jonny Bray and Matt Ainsworth each put out a late rally to pick up a save. AMONG THE CONFERENCE LEADERS Several Bullets found themselves ranked among the Centennial Conference leaders in a statistical category heading into Friday’s games. Junior Chuck Probst was first in hits (57), triples (8), and slugging percentage (.760) and second in batting average (.442), runs (34), and RBIs (30). In addition, senior Chase Stopyra led the conference in ERA (1.40), as did classmate Aaron Bezio in saves (5). SCOUTING THE GARNET  Swarthmore opened its series versus Ursinus this past Tuesday and dropped a tough 5-4 decision in Collegeville. The Garnet rallied to tie the game with a three-run eighth, only to see the Bears come back with the go-ahead run in the bottom of the inning.  Offensively, senior Wesley Fishburn has batted .500 over 11 games and 40 at-bats on the season. Sophomore Conor Elliott has also performed well, hitting .343.  On the mound, freshman Sawyer Lake has led the way, going 3-2 with a 1.83 ERA over seven games and 44 1/3 innings pitched. Entering Friday, he ranked fourth in the Centennial Conference in ERA and fifth in strikeouts (46).
