The Washington State track and field program will send a compact contingent of competitors to the 13th Annual Sam Adams Classic, March 22-23, at the Pine Bowl/Boppell Track at Whitworth University in Spokane...other NCAA DI teams sending entries include Gonzaga, Idaho and Eastern Washington...events that include Cougars entries (javelin, hammer and 5000m) begin at 3:30 p.m. Thurs., March 22...remaining events start at 4 p.m. Friday, March 23...most of the WSU T&F team members will train through this meet in order to be at their competitive best for the prestigious Stanford Invitational March 30-31.

WAYNE PHIPPS, DIR. OF WSU CROSS COUNTRY/TRACK & FIELD Wayne Phipps (University of British Columbia ‘91) is in his fourth season with the Washington State track and field program...Phipps led the Cougar men’s cross country program back-to-back-to-back NCAA Championships at-large berth appearances...Cougs finished 21st in 2017, 14th in 2016 - the highest in 32 years, and 26th in 2015....in track and field seasons, mentored studentathletes to WSU top-ten performances 24 times in the indoor season and 47 times in the outdoor season....there have also been conference all-academic honors awarded to WSU student-athletes 51 times in cross country, 88 times in indoor track and 86 times in outdoor track...Phipps became the 15th men’s coach and the second coach for the combined men’s and women’s program at WSU on July 1, 2014, after 19 years at the University of Idaho...while at Idaho, Phipps was honored 14 times as a conference coach of the year and led the Vandals to a record 16 conference titles.

WSU HIGHLIGHTS FROM USC TROJAN INVITATIONAL MARCH 16-17 Brock Eager, Nick Johnson, the men’s 400m relay squad and Greer Alsop grabbed wins at the USC Trojan Invite...Eager won the hammer with a throw of 66.50m/218-2...Johnson won the 110m hurdles in 14.26, his legal wind PR...4x100m relay of Zach Smith, Ja’Maun Charles, Ray Littles and Ethan Gardner won in 40.82...Alsop won the women’s triple jump with a leap of 12.32m/40-5...runners-up from WSU included: freshman Jake Ulrich in the 400m (47.81), Cole Smith in the javelin (64.74m/212-5), Marlow Schulz in the 800m (2:09.05), and Oyinlola Akinlosotu in the women’s triple jump (11.81m/38-9)...third-place finishes were: Ja’Maun Charles in th 100m (10.53), Peyton Fredrickson in the men’s high jump (2.05m/6-8 3/4), Amani Brown in the men’s hammer (PR 61.67m/202-4), Stephanie Cho in the women’s 400m hurdles (PR 59.27), women’s 4x400m relay team of Cho, Schulz, Alissa Brooks-Johnson and Jelena Grujic (3:43.96), Molly Scharmann in the pole vault (3.70m/12-1 1/2), and Kelsey Kehl in the javelin (44.85m/147-2)...the WSU men’s and women’s middle distance and distance runners missed the USC meet due to being snowed in Saturday morning at Big Bear Mountain Resort where they had four days of high altitude training during this week of WSU Spring break... at the Whitworth Buc Scoring meet, Chrisshnay Brown won both the women’s shot put and discus.

EAGER NAMED PAC-12 MEN’S FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK Washington State’s Brock Eager (redshirt junior, Renton, Wash.) has been named the Pac-12 Men’s Field Athlete of the Week after his stellar opening hammer throw at the USC Trojan Invitational meet March 16... Eager threw a distance of 66.50m/218-2 to capture first place among the 13 competitors...his mark leads the Pac-12, is the best in the NCAA West Region, and is fifth-best in the nation...last month he won the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Indoor Championships title in the 35-pound weight throw...he is the reigning Pac-12 hammer champion and earned All-America second team honors at the 2017 NCAA Championships....lifetime-best hammer throw of 68.66m/225-3 came last spring in Pullman and is fourth-best in WSU’s alltime records...second time in his WSU career that Eager has been tabbed for conference’s Athlete of the Week honors, earning the accolade in the Spring of 2017.
