WSU TRACK & FIELD TO SEND LIMITED ENTRIES TO LOCAL MEETS

The Washington State track and field teams will send a limited number of entries to local meets this weekend...only throwers will be competing at the 7th Annual Whitworth Twilight meet in Spokane is Thursday, April 12 at the Pine Bowl...events begin at 2:30 p.m...the 46th Annual EWU Pelluer Invitational is Friday and Saturday, April 13-14 in Cheney...the pole vault and discus take place Friday at 2 p.m. and remaining field events start Saturday at 10 a.m. at Roos Field...WSU entries for both meets are listed on pages 3 and 4 of this release...results will be posted on the track schedule page at wsucougars.com when available. WAYNE PHIPPS, DIR. OF WSU CROSS COUNTRY/TRACK & FIELD Wayne Phipps (University of British Columbia ‘91) is in his fourth season with the Washington State track and field program...Phipps led the Cougar men’s cross country program back-to-back-to-back NCAA Championships at-large berth appearances...Cougs finished 21st in 2017, 14th in 2016 - the highest in 32 years, and 26th in 2015....in track and field seasons, mentored studentathletes to WSU top-ten performances 35 times in the indoor season and 47 times in the outdoor season....there have also been conference all-academic honors awarded to WSU student-athletes 51 times in cross country, 88 times in indoor track and 86 times in outdoor track...Phipps became the 15th men’s coach and the second coach for the combined men’s and women’s program at WSU on July 1, 2014, after 19 years at the University of Idaho...while at Idaho, Phipps was honored 14 times as a conference coach of the year and led the Vandals to a record 16 conference titles. WSU HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE OREGON PEPSI TEAM INVITATIONAL APRIL 7 WSU track and field teams had many notable performances in spite of the less than favorable conditions of driving rain and blustery winds...hammer throwers Brock Eager (65.33m/214-4) and Amani Brown (PR 63.07m/206-11)...javelin throwers won their events Atina Kamasi (45.27m/148-6) and Cole Smith (62.98m/206-7)...pole vaulters were forced to retreat to under the grandstands and out of the elements...Molly Scharmann (3.94m/12-11) won the women’s pole vault and Emily Coombs leared a PR height of 3.79m/12-5 1/4...Sander Moldau won the men’s vault (5.15m/16-10 3/4) and Tucker Mjelde had a PR 4.80m/15-9...not so lucky to remain outside, Peyton Fredrickson won the men’s high jump (2.01m/6-7)...Aoife Martin threw a PR and the sixth-best women’s hammer mark in WSU all-time of 54.98m/180-4 and Stacia Bell had PR of 48.64m/159-7...Vallery Korir claimed the lone WSU win on the track, and it was a decisive victory in the women’s 3000m race in a time of 9:51.38...in the team scoring, the No. 2 Oregon women won with 185 points as the WSU and BYU teams finished tied for second at 152 points, and Washington was fourth with 112...the No. 4 Oregon men’s team won with 171 points followed by No. 24 BYU’s 160, WSU’s 157 and Washington’s 153.

EAGER NAMED PAC-12 MEN’S FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK WSU’s Brock Eager (redshirt junior, Renton, Wash.) was the Pac-12 Men’s Field Athlete of the Week (March 12-18) after his stellar opening hammer throw at the USC Trojan Invitational meet of 66.50m/218-2 to capture first place among the 13 competitors...mark leads the Pac-12, the NCAA West Region, and is fifth-best nationally... won the 2018 MPSF Indoor Championships 35-pound weight throw title...reigning Pac12 hammer champion...All-America second team....lifetime-best hammer throw of 68.66m/225-3 (2017).
