WSU TRACK & FIELD AT OREGON PEPSI AND SCC WAR XI MEETS

The Washington State track and field teams will be competing at the Oregon Pepsi Team Invitational at Hayward Field Saturday, April 7...field events begin at 11:30 a.m. and running events at 1:50 p.m...men’s and women’s teams competing are host Oregon (No 4 men, No. 2 women), BYU (No. 24 men), Washington and WSU....scoring format is 9-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 for individual events and 9-7-6 for relays..the SCC WAR XI meet takes place at Spokane Falls College track complex...competitors will be from local and regional DI, DII and Community College schools...results will be posted on the track schedule page at wsucougars.com when available.

WAYNE PHIPPS, DIR. OF WSU CROSS COUNTRY/TRACK & FIELD Wayne Phipps (University of British Columbia ‘91) is in his fourth season with the Washington State track and field program...Phipps led the Cougar men’s cross country program back-to-back-to-back NCAA Championships at-large berth appearances...Cougs finished 21st in 2017, 14th in 2016 - the highest in 32 years, and 26th in 2015....in track and field seasons, mentored studentathletes to WSU top-ten performances 35 times in the indoor season and 47 times in the outdoor season....there have also been conference all-academic honors awarded to WSU student-athletes 51 times in cross country, 88 times in indoor track and 86 times in outdoor track...Phipps became the 15th men’s coach and the second coach for the combined men’s and women’s program at WSU on July 1, 2014, after 19 years at the University of Idaho...while at Idaho, Phipps was honored 14 times as a conference coach of the year and led the Vandals to a record 16 conference titles.

WSU HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE STANFORD INVITATIONAL AND UCLA JIM BUSH LEGENDS MEETS Cougars distance runners and throwers were at the Stanford Invite March 30-31...Vallery Korir broke her own school record in the 10k with a time of 33:52.28 (19th place)...Chandler Teigen ran a 1500m PR of 3:43.13 and Colton Johnsen had a PR in the steeplechase of 9:05.11...throwers reaching PRs included hammer throwers Brock Eager (69.57m/2283 - 4th-best at WSU all-time), Amani Brown (63.02m/206-9) and Aoife Martin (54.54m/178-11) and discus throwers Tyler Jackson (50.56m/165-10) and Kaitlin Krouse (46.86m/153-9)...at the UCLA Jim Bush Legends meet March 31, several Cougars had school top 10 and PR performances...Alissa Brooks-Johnson, 100m hurdles 13.73 - 7th-best at WSU, 400m hrudles 57.86 - 4th-best at WSU...Molly Scharmann, pole vault 4.10m/13-5 1/4 - tied 3rd-best at WSU...Nick Johnson won the 110m hurdles with a PR of 14.04 with PRs from Christapherson Grant (14.32) and Abu Kamara (14.54)... Grant also PRd in the 400m hurdles (53.97)...Zach Smith PR in 200m (21.32)...women’s PRs at UCLA included Marlow Schulz, 800m (2:08.97), Jordyn Tucker, 100m (12.06), and Tierney Silliman, 100m (12.12) and 200m (24.63).

EAGER NAMED PAC-12 MEN’S FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK WSU’s Brock Eager (redshirt junior, Renton, Wash.) was the Pac-12 Men’s Field Athlete of the Week (March 12-18) after his stellar opening hammer throw at the USC Trojan Invitational meet of 66.50m/218-2 to capture first place among the 13 competitors...mark leads the Pac-12, the NCAA West Region, and is fifth-best nationally... won the 2018 MPSF Indoor Championships 35-pound weight throw title...reigning Pac12 hammer champion...All-America second team....lifetime-best hammer throw of 68.66m/225-3 (2017).
