10/21/13 Nick Retzlaff U17/18 Capital Area RailHawks Team Member
Nick Retzlaff is this week’s Capital Area RailHawks Player Spotlight. Nick is a member of the U17/18 Capital Area RailHawks Team for the 2013-2014 season, but will be joining NCSU in January 2014. Retzlaff started playing soccer when he was 4 years old with Damon Nahas at Next Level Academy (NLA), which he continued until he was 12 years of age. He also participated in the Olympic Development Program (ODP) for four years and was selected for the Region III Pool in his 4th year. He was later selected to the R3 ODP Team and was selected to go with the group to Costa Rica. Retzlaff has played in the Capital Area Soccer League (CASL) his entire life – “from YTS to Classic and now the Academy for the second year.” Nick recognizes Scotty Schweitzer and Mark Girard, from NLA, as his biggest non-club coaching influences. “Ever since I me them, when I was 9, they have helped me to continue my skill, tactical, and psychological development. I trust whatever they say to help me and improve my game,” said Retzlaff. He added, “My biggest club team coaching influences have been Paul Forster and John Bradford. They have helped me grow as and mature as a player on the field and to understand mental and tactical sides of the game on the field.” According to Retzlaff, “my short term goals are to play my way into a good amount of playing time in my freshman year at NC State and hopefully win a National Championship.” His long term goals are to play professionally for as long as he can and then go into coaching afterwards. Nick will be graduating from high school early to start at NC State early, therefore he’s set specific goals for the 18 Academy Team while he’s here. “I hope to win the rest of the games that I will be here for. I do believe that our team is very good and deep and, thus, I hope that we can still win the Academy National Championship,” he said. Retzlaff recognizes what the Academy means to him. “The Capital Area RailHawks affords me the chance to continue to better myself and my skill. It allows me to continue to play at a high level every single day against the best competition, while constantly challenging myself. Finally, it allows me to do what I love every single day of the week,” said Nick. Best of luck to Nick this year and the U17/18 Capital Area RailHawks Academy Team.
