2015 Southern Connecticut State University Volleyball Week 10 So. Conn. St. Univ. (6-23, 1-11) at Southern New Hampshire (9-13, 4-6) • Friday, Nov. 6, 2015 • 7 p.m. • Manchester, N.H. So. Conn. WEEK TEN After dropping back-to-back games against American International and Franklin Pierce, the Southern Connecticut State University women’s volleyball team looks to snap a five-game losing streak as the Owls tackle Southern New Hampshire University on Friday and Stonehill College on Saturday. TEAM RECORDS AND INFORMATION -The Penmen are currently 9-13 on the season and 4-6 in the Northeast-10 Conference. The team is also on a five-game losing streak as the Penmen dropped their last game at New Haven, 3-1. -The Skyhawks are 10-14 overall and 4-8 in the league as well as on a two-game losing streak. The team lost back-to-back matches to Le Moyne and Saint Rose. ALL-TIME SERIES AGAINST SNHU The Penmen and Owls are tied at 9-9 in the all-time series. ALL-TIME SERIES AGAINST STONEHILL The Skyhawks lead the all-time series against the Owls 16-4. WEEK NINE RECAP Last week the Owls posted a record of 0-2 in both the regular season and the NE-10 Conference to AIC and Franklin Pierce University. Southern Connecticut opened the week with a four-set loss to the Yellow Jackets before ending the week with a five-set loss to Franklin Pierce on Senior Day. FORD LEADS THE WAY Junior Faith Ford led both the Owls’ offense and defense in kills and blocks last week. She averaged 2.89 kills and 0.78 blocks per set for the Owls as well as recorded an assist and a dig. BALSKUS AND CARLSON DOUBLE-DOUBLE Against Franklin Pierce, both Carly Balskus and Taylor Carlson recorded a double-double for the Owls, respectively. Balskus registered her third double-double of the season with 12 kills and 11 digs while Carlson picked up her first doubledouble of the season with 48 assists and 10 digs. CARMAN RANKS WITHIN NE-10 After finishing last week with 40 digs, Morgan Carman is now tied in the Northeast-10 Conference in fifth with 435 total digs this season.

LOOKING BACK AT LAST YEAR Southern Connecticut finished the 2014 season with an overall record of 7-22 and a conference record of 3-11.

GUNNESON AND HAUSER EARN ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT AWARD Kelly Gunneson and Nicole Hauser were two out of 37 SCSU student-athletes that were named to the Division II Athletics Directors Association Academic Achievement award for the 2014-15 academic year. The student-athlete must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale, have attended a minimum of two years (four semesters) of college level work and have been an active member of an intercollegiate team during his/her last academic year.

O’CAPTAIN, MY CAPTAIN For the second year in a row, seniors Morgan Carman and Kelly Gunneson will serve as team captains for the Owls this fall.

GUNNESON INDUCTED INTO NATIONAL MATH HONOR SOCIETY Last fall, Kelly Gunneson was inducted into Pi Mu Epsilon, the National Math Honor Society.

RETURNING TO THE COURT The Owls have 13 student-athletes returning from last year’s team, including Morgan Carman, Jasmin Barrett, Taylor Carlson, Kelly Gunneson, Sean Taylor, Alexandra Nimz, Carly Balskus, Alexandria Jurgens, Taylor Flowers, Faith Ford, Briauna Tutwiler, Haley Samuelson and Taylor MacDowell.

GUNNESON NAMED TO NE-10 ALL-ACADEMIC TEAM Senior Kelly Gunneson was named to the Northeast-10 Conference Volleyball All-Academic Team for her work in the classroom and on the court last fall. To be eligible for selection to the academic teams, a student-athlete must have met and/or exceeded the following minimum requirements: participated in at least half of the team’s competitions and be either a starter or significant contributor; achieved a 3.3 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale); and completed at least one academic year at his/her current institution.

OWLS WELCOME FIVE NEWCOMERS The Owls welcome five student-athletes to the team this year: Bridgette Walsh, Jennifer Dawson, Leanna Jadus, Jessica Schmitz and Janae Owen.
