A Look at the DUTCHMEN Union comes into today’s game as the conference leader with a 7-1 mark in the Liberty League, as the team has continued to play well here in 2017. The Dutchmen are fourth in the conference in team hitting with a .310 batting average, ranking third in hits, runs and RBI so far this year. As a team, the Dutchmen have an earned run average of 4.96, striking out 97 batters over 141.2 innings of work. The Dutchmen do a nice job of catching the ball as well, as Union is second in the conference in field percentage at .961. Junior Jake Vesling, the reigning Player of the Week in the Liberty League, is hitting second in the conference in hitting with a .465 batting clip through 16 games. Teammate Kent Curran is second in the conference in slugging percentage with a .661 mark, while Vesling is the conference leader in on-base percentage at .549. Ryan Kuchar leads the team in ERA with a 2.45 average, which ranks sixth.

The Brewers are coming off an 11-1 win on Wednesday afternoon, defeating CCNY here on Prentiss Field. In that game, Bobby Kinne and Evan Trausch both totaled two hits apiece while freshman arm Billy Mathiesen tossed six innings of scoreless ball to get the win. As a team this season, Vassar is hitting .268 with 29 doubles and five homers. Vassar is second in the Liberty League in hit batsmen with 31 this season, also posting 29 stolen bases which is fifth in the Liberty League. Freshman Matt Martino is currently sixth in the conference with a .410 batting average, while ranking 10th in slugging percentage with a .538. Taylor Smach is tied for second in the conference in hit by pitches with six, and Denis Shanagher is fifth in the Liberty League with eight stolen bases. Sophomore Bryan Rubin has thrown the ball well for Vassar out of the pen, allowing just three earned runs in 10 innings, while John Madsen has also been effective as a reliever for Vassar in his team-high eight appearances.

Vassar is 15-47 against the Dutchmen all-time, as Union has won the last six ballgames and 10 of the last 12 outings. Last year, Union took all four meetings with the Brewers, including 4-2 and 8-5 wins in Poughkeepsie.

Brewer Bio on . . . Denis Shanagher Senior Denis Shanagher has had a great start to his fourth and final season with the Brewers, as he has posted a .379 batting average over 18 games, starting 17 times. Shanagher leads the team with 22 hits and five doubles, while his 11 runs are also a team-best. He has stolen eight bases in 10 opportunities this season, and also has driven in seven runs in 2017. Shanagher leads the team in multiple hit contests with seven, while he also posted the longest hit streak of the season for the Brewers with an eight-gamer earlier in the year. He has also reached base in 15 straight games, tying for the team lead with sophomore Taylor Smach. Shanagher has also played multiple positions this season, doing well at second base, center field and shortstop. Shanagher is hitting .452 this year when playing second base, tops of any player at any position for VC.

The Brewers are coming off an 11-1 win on Wednesday afternoon, defeating CCNY here on Prentiss Field. In that game, Bobby Kinne and Evan Trausch both totaled two hits apiece while freshman arm Billy Mathiesen tossed six innings of scoreless ball to get the win. As a team this season, Vassar is hitting .268 with 29 doubles and five homers. Vassar is second in the Liberty League in hit batsmen with 31 this season, also posting 29 stolen bases which is fifth in the Liberty League. Freshman Matt Martino is currently sixth in the conference with a .410 batting average, while ranking 10th in slugging percentage with a .538. Taylor Smach is tied for second in the conference in hit by pitches with six, and Denis Shanagher is fifth in the Liberty League with eight stolen bases. Sophomore Bryan Rubin has thrown the ball well for Vassar out of the pen, allowing just three earned runs in 10 innings, while John Madsen has also been effective as a reliever for Vassar in his team-high eight appearances.

Vassar vs. UNION
Vassar is 15-47 against the Dutchmen all-time, as Union has won the last six ballgames and 10 of the last 12 outings. Last year, Union took all four meetings with the Brewers, including 4-2 and 8-5 wins in Poughkeepsie.

Brewer Bio on . . . Denis Shanagher Senior Denis Shanagher has had a great start to his fourth and final season with the Brewers, as he has posted a .379 batting average over 18 games, starting 17 times. Shanagher leads the team with 22 hits and five doubles, while his 11 runs are also a team-best. He has stolen eight bases in 10 opportunities this season, and also has driven in seven runs in 2017. Shanagher leads the team in multiple hit contests with seven, while he also posted the longest hit streak of the season for the Brewers with an eight-gamer earlier in the year. He has also reached base in 15 straight games, tying for the team lead with sophomore Taylor Smach. Shanagher has also played multiple positions this season, doing well at second base, center field and shortstop. Shanagher is hitting .452 this year when playing second base, tops of any player at any position for VC.
