The Vassar College Brewers looks to keep their momentum going from Wednesday’s win over Skidmore College today with a Liberty League doubleheader with Clarkson University. Vassar got some great pitching and timely hitting in the victory over the Thoroughbreds, as Joe Lovizio went five innings to earn the win, allowing no runs and three hits. Brett Zaziski added a double and a triple for the Brewers in the win. Zaziski comes into the game ranking in the national top-10 in five categories, and is currently the hardest batter in the nation to strikeout, having not fanned in any of his 24 at-bats. He leads the League and team in hitting with a .583 batting average, scoring a team-best 11 runs, while sophomore Cory Wuenschell is hitting .467 in four starts this year. Brooks English is tied for the team-lead with eight RBI. The Brewers have gotten solid contributions from Adam Erkis and Connor Cucalon on the hill this season.
A Look at the Golden Knights The Golden Knights come into today’s doubleheader with the Brewers having won three of its last four, most recently splitting a conference double-dip with Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Wednesday afternoon. Clarkson played the first eight games of its season in Central Florida, going 4-4, but had to wait 16 days after returning to Potsdam to get back out on the field at RPI. Clarkson’s offense has been led by John Coleman, who comes into the game with a team-best .324 batting average, homering once and totaling 12 hits. Chris Miller has posted a .313 mark in six starts for the Golden Knights, and David Wixted has scored a team-best eight runs. Pete Roma has seen action in four games, starting three times, posting a team-leading 1.62 ERA. Jarrod Mattingly is 2-0 with a 3.68 ERA for CU, and Greg Jasek is 1-1, sporting a 2.30 ERA in 15.2 innings of work.
Brewers vs. Clarkson All-Time The Golden Knights of Clarkson University come to town holding a 31-8 all-time advantage in the all-time series with the Brewers. Last season, these two teams only played twice, with the squads splitting a twinbill in Poughkeepsie. In 2012, these two teams split their four games. Brett Zaziski had four hits in Vassar’s win last season, while CU’s Pete Roma got the win in game two with five innings of scoreless ball. Brewer Bio on . . . Brooks English English, a sophomore third baseman and designated hitter from Milton, Massachusetts, has been an impact bat for the Brewers since his arrival at Vassar last year. His quiet approach and fantastic ability to adjust at the plate are what makes him such a successful batter. He is the team’s best hitter with two strikes and also with two outs, showing that the big time moments in games are when he shines. English is 9-for-17 (.529) with runners on base this year, also chalking up seven hits in 10 at-bats with runners in scoring position. Even more impressive is the fact that all of English’s RBI have come with two outs. On the season, English is hitting .407, with his 11 hits placing him second on the team’s hit chart. English has a six-game hitting streak coming into today’s doubleheader with Clarkson, and has reached base safely in his last 10 contests dating back to last season.

Brewer Bio on . . . Brooks English English, a sophomore third baseman and designated hitter from Milton, Massachusetts, has been an impact bat for the Brewers since his arrival at Vassar last year. His quiet approach and fantastic ability to adjust at the plate are what makes him such a successful batter. He is the team’s best hitter with two strikes and also with two outs, showing that the big time moments in games are when he shines. English is 9-for-17 (.529) with runners on base this year, also chalking up seven hits in 10 at-bats with runners in scoring position. Even more impressive is the fact that all of English’s RBI have come with two outs. On the season, English is hitting .407, with his 11 hits placing him second on the team’s hit chart. English has a six-game hitting streak coming into today’s doubleheader with Clarkson, and has reached base safely in his last 10 contests dating back to last season.
