A Look at the THOROUGHBREDS Skidmore College comes to town looking to snap a five-game losing streak, having dropped three last weekend to Union College while falling twice yesterday to Vassar. Despite that figure, the Thoroughbreds sport the Liberty League’s second-best batting average at .300 this year, tying for the conference lead in long balls with six. Skidmore’s 94 runs are the second-most of any time in the League, while it’s slugging percentage ranks second as well behind just Union College. Skidmore’s pitching staff has a team ERA of 6.48 this year, allowing 77 earned runs in 107 innings of work. Extra-base hits have hurt the Skidmore staff, as it has allowed 42 knocks for more than one base, including 33 doubles. Josh Brown is fifth in the Liberty League in hitting with a .409 hitting clip, while Shankar Mani is eighth in hitting with a .388. Expect to see Skidmore go with Andrew Aikins (2-1) and Will Potter (0-1) as its two starters today, both tall right-handers.

The Brewers open their 2016 home slate this afternoon, finishing a four-game series with the Thoroughbreds of Skidmore College. Vassar and Skidmore played a doubleheader yesterday afternoon, with the Brewers using a pair of six-run innings, one in each game, to earn a doubleheader sweep with scores of 6-4 in each contest. Matt Hernandez connected on a three-run shot in game one, while Nick Johnson was 4-for-4 with a big two-run double in the game two. Johnny Mrlik earned the win in the opener, while Jonathan Hong chalked up the “W” in the nightcap. Johnson comes into the twin bill this afternoon third in the conference in hitting with a .414 batting average, as he leads the Liberty League with 24 hits. Vassar will send its two junior starters, Adam Erkis and Trent Berg, to the hill this afternoon. Erkis has a team-best 3.00 ERA, while Berg has held opponents to a team-best .192 average against.

Brewer Bio on . . . NICK JOHNSON Nick Johnson, an outfielder from San Francisco, California, comes into today’s game with Skidmore continuing to be one of the best hitters in the Liberty League. Johnson has been part of one of the best recruiting classes in program history, as Johnson’s powerful lefthanded bat has been in the lineup since his arrival at Vassar. So far this season, Johnson has started all 16 games for the Brewers in right field, batting .414 while chalking up team-highs in hits (24), runs (14), doubles (7) and RBI (14). Johnson is getting on base at a .500 percentage so far this season, and also has stolen four bags on the year. Johnson was named as an Honorable Mention All-Liberty league player as a freshman, taking 2014 All-Liberty League First Team honors as a sophomore. Last season, Johnson picked up Second Team accolades after hitting .369 for Vassar.

Johnson comes into the twin bill this afternoon third in the conference in hitting with a .414 batting average, as he leads the Liberty League with 24 hits. Vassar will send its two junior starters, Adam Erkis and Trent Berg, to the hill this afternoon. Erkis has a team-best 3.00 ERA, while Berg has held opponents to a team-best .192 average against.

Brewer Bio on . . . NICK JOHNSON Nick Johnson, an outfielder from San Francisco, California, comes into today’s game with Skidmore continuing to be one of the best hitters in the Liberty League. Johnson has been part of one of the best recruiting classes in program history, as Johnson’s powerful lefthanded bat has been in the lineup since his arrival at Vassar. So far this season, Johnson has started all 16 games for the Brewers in right field, batting .414 while chalking up team-highs in hits (24), runs (14), doubles (7) and RBI (14). Johnson is getting on base at a .500 percentage so far this season, and also has stolen four bags on the year. Johnson was named as an Honorable Mention All-Liberty league player as a freshman, taking 2014 All-Liberty League First Team honors as a sophomore. Last season, Johnson picked up Second Team accolades after hitting .369 for Vassar.
