“You shall not make for yourself a graven image, or any likeness of any- Shown Cream thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the Earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them or serve them…” Exodus 20:4-5 “You shall not make for yourself a graven image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them or serve them...” Deuteronomy 5:8-9 The second Commandment is very closely related to the first Commandment. If the first Commandment tells us WHO to worship; the second Commandment tells us HOW to worship the one true God. God forbids us from making an image of Him because He cannot be represented by any image. John 4: 24 explains “God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” Because God is omnipotent, omnipresent and constant, He cannot be captured adequately with a visual or carved image. This does not mean that our places of worship must be free of art or statues. In fact, God commanded the construction of the tabernacle to include a statue of an angel. It means that we must not bow down or worship these images. The glory of God cannot be reduced to images or statues. If we use statues as an aid to worship, it implies to others that the statue is a form of God, and nothing could be further from the truth. So what of the crosses and crucifixes displayed in nearly every Christian church? God gave us His Son as our redeemer. The cross or crucifix is merely a symbol of our redemption, reminding us of the price Christ paid to save us — nothing more. We do not pray TO the cross or WITH the cross. And we know that our prayers and worship are not dependent on the presence of the cross. So here is a simple test of the second Commandment. Do we have pictures, charms or items that we consider to be “lucky” or that we hold dear as items to safeguard our health or wealth? These items are forbidden by the second CommandToll free 877-239-3655 ment. GOD is our lucky charm. GOD safeguards us www.stitchintree.com each and every day. Ten Commandments PATTERN SERIES
Second Commandment I chose the block, Cross and Crown, to remind us of the Second Commandment. There is a distinct difference between symbols of our faith, such as crosses or crowns of thorns, and the use of idols or images in our worship. We should be able to worship God and pray to Him anytime, anywhere — without the presence of images, carvings or idols.
