In its literal sense, this Commandment may seem like an easy one to follow. Generally speaking, we do not make a practice of killing others. In fact, we have laws that support this Commandment. I’m not going to delve into the types of intentional killing that are covered by this Commandment. Rather, I’m going to explore the flip side of the Commandment. Jesus put a loving spin on this Commandment when he taught us not to be angry with our neighbor, not to insult or defame our brother or sister, not to demean others. In Matthew 22:39, Jesus commands us to “love your neighbor as yourself.” And just to be clear that loving others is directly tied to the Sixth Commandment, 1 John 3:15 warns us, “Any one who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.” Considering the Sixth Commandment from this perspective makes it a little more difficult to comply. In a sense, I disobey the Sixth Commandment every time I pre-judge another, based on race, age, gender, political affiliation (hair color, tattoos, dress). When I stand before God, seeking judgement, it won’t be enough to say “I didn’t kill anyone.” And it won’t be enough to say “I don’t hate anyone.” When I know that someone is angry with me for what I have done, Jesus commands me to go to that person and resolve the issue. Murder is present in our world every day. We cannot avoid it, but we do not have to promote it, Instead, we should promote life, celebrate the living and honor the lives of others. We should seek to resolve our disagreements with others, and love each other, as God has loved us.

Ten Commandments PATTERN SERIES
Sixth Commandment It is nature’s design for a fox to kill a goose, but it is not God’s design for humans to kill each other. I’ve chosen the classic Fox and Geese block to represent the Sixth Commandment, You shall not kill.
