Americans work longer hours, longer weeks and deal with more stress than ever before. Even when we have time off, we fill up our time with activities, and end up feeling like we need a vacation from our vacation! Surely, this isn’t what God intended for us. In six days, He created the heavens, the earth and all of the living plants and creatures. On the seventh day He rested. And He commands the same of us. The word “Sabbath” comes from a word that means “stop” or “cease.” Forty years after God gave Moses the Ten Commandments (Exodus), a second list (Deuteronomy) was given to a new generation of Israelites. This commandment is expanded: “Six days you shall labor, and do all your work; but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God; in it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, or your manservant, or your maidservant, or your ox, or your ass, or any of your cattle, or the sojourner who is within your gates, that your manservant and your maidservant may rest as well as you.” Deuteronomy 5:13-14. On one hand, the seventh day set aside to worship the Lord, but it also is a day of rest for EVERYONE. Regularly worshipping God, together with other Christians, is a constant reminder that our worship of the Lord is far more important than anything we do on the other six days of the week. Our lives belong to God, and resting from work on the seventh day acknowledges that our ability to earn a living depends on God, and we should trust that He will take care of us seven days a week. He only asks that we give Him one day to honor Him, adore Him, worship Him, praise Him. So, whether you worship on Saturday or Sunday, plan to take it easy the rest of the day… God’s orders! Who knows? You just might live a little longer.
