“You shall not bear false witness Shown against your neighbor. ” Exodus Cream 20:16 & Deuteronomy 5:20 The last six Commandments instruct us how to show love for our neighbor. We demonstrate our love of God by demonstrating our love for our neighbors, and this love is evidenced by what comes out of our mouths… Technically speaking, the Ninth Commandment relates to public truthfulness, especially in court testimony. This Commandment is also violated when an accused person pleads “not guilty” to a crime that he/she committed. Just think of the time and resources that would be saved if a criminal would admit, “yes, I did it, and I deserve a fair punishment…” But the Ninth Commandment extends well beyond the courts; it prohibits damaging another person’s character by lying about them or withholding the truth to defend them. The National Enquirer has made big business out of publishing lies, and we promote those lies each time we purchase the magazine (or others like it). My grandmother used to say that a lie has no legs. It takes more lies to support it. Soon, it becomes difficult to remember the lies that have been told. And telling too many white lies can make us color blind to the truth. Gossipmongers are also in violation of the Ninth Commandment. Jesus directs us “Let what you say be simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything more than this comes from evil.” Matthew 5:37 He makes it painfully clear that our speech either reflects our relationship with God or the influence of Satan in our lives. Are there any exceptions to the rule? YES. The Bible contains a several examples of God allowing less than honesty when a person’s life was at risk. Here’s one you’ll recognize. When Pharaoh decreed that all male babies were to be killed at birth, Hebrew midwives hid baby Moses and lied about his death and were rewarded for their actions. We should use our words to build people up, not tear them down. If a person’s word is their bond, what do our words say about us? Luckily, God’s word Toll free 877-239-3655 is His bond. He loves us unconditionally and will forgive www.stitchintree.com us all our sins. Please contact us if you find an error in this pattern or

Ten Commandments PATTERN SERIES

Ninth Commandment “Tippecanoe & Tyler Too” was the campaign slogan in 1840 when William Henry Harrison defeated Incumbent President Martin Van Buren. So often, in a political campaign, politicians will do anything and say anything to get elected. Some will even tell outright lies to gain public support. Sometimes, it’s hard to know what is true and what is a lie. I’ve chosen the block, Tippecanoe, to remind of us of the command to be truthful, honest and forthright at all times.
