If you have a bellybutton, then you did not just magically appear, you were created by two individuals. Whether we were raised by biological parents, adoptive parents, foster parents, a step-parent or grandparents, this Commandment calls for us to honor them. We do so in three stages. When we were young children, we were expected to obey our parents. The apostle Paul references this Commandment when he tells us “Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for it is right” Ephesians 6:1. Obedience to parents also teaches devotion to Jesus Christ. We honor the people who parent us by respecting the role God has given them. As we become young adults, we honor our parents by respecting and appreciating their contribution to our lives. They have raised us and nurtured us, and they continue to guide us as we make life-changing decisions. This Commandment calls us to listen attentively and consider their advice. As we continue to mature and our parents age, honoring them means to care for them, calling them and visiting them more frequently, taking them to the doctor, running errands, and seeing that their needs are met. The Fifth Commandment is a principle about our attitude toward authority, in general. A society that is full of generations who have learned to honor their parents (and other authority figures) runs smoothly and efficiently. The fifth commandment teaches how to relate to our teachers, coaches, pastors, bosses, police, government officials. If we do not honor these people in auToll free 877-239-3655 thority, then our society will begin to crumble, just as www.stitchintree.com it is doing so today...
