REMOVING OLD RIM

6

Removing Old Rim Once you have uninstalled the Copenhagen Wheel from the bicycle, remove the original rim and spokes ALWAYS turn the Copenhagen Wheel’s power switch to the OFF (0) position when uninstalled, installed but off the ground (e.g., in a bike stand or upside down) and when doing maintenance.

1. Deflate tire and remove tire, tube and rim strip Deflate the tire on the Copenhagen Wheel and remove the tire, tube and rim strip. These steps are performed the same way on a Copenhagen Wheel as on a conventional bicycle wheel. The rim strip may be reused with the new rim. 2. Undo spoke nipples Using a standard nipple driver, fully unscrew the spoke nipples. Remove them from the spokes and discard them. 3. Remove spoke ends from rim Without removing the spokes from their pockets in the hub, remove the spoke ends from the spoke holes in the rim. On 700c Copenhagen Wheels, they should come out with minimal force. On 26” Wheels, you may need to flex the spokes slightly to free the spoke ends. 4. Discard original rim Discard the original rim, even if no damage is visible. It is not suitable for reuse on another Copenhagen Wheel.

REMOVING OLD SPOKES

Removing Old Spokes The Copenhagen Wheel uses unique V-shaped spokes that lock into retention pockets on the outside of its hub. They are unlike those on a conventional bicycle wheel and require a different technique to remove and install.

1. Rotate spokes out of retention pockets To remove a spoke from its pocket, begin by pushing one end of the spoke towards the pocket while pulling the other end away from the pocket. This will rotate the spoke around the apex of the pocket.

Do not force the spokes into or out of their retention pockets. Doing so could damage the hub and/or the spokes.

Repeat on both sides of the Wheel until you have removed all 18 spokes from their retention pockets. 2. Use original spokes to practice removal and installation If you are new to servicing Copenhagen Wheels, we recommend using the original spokes to practice spoke removal and installation before re-lacing the Wheel. You can find detailed installation instructions in the “Installing New Spokes” section of this guide.

REMOVING OLD SPOKES

1. ROTATE THE SPOKE AROUND THE APEX OF THE RETENTION POCKET

2. LIFT THE SPOKE WHILE ROTATING UNTIL IT COMES FREE OF THE POCKET

INSPECTING WHEEL CHASSIS

10

Inspecting Wheel Chassis Once you have removed the original spokes from the hub, inspect the hub for damage. This is particularly important if the original rim was dented or any of the spokes were bent. 1. Inspect overhangs on retention pockets The spoke retention pockets hold the spokes in place using an overhanging lip. Visually inspect each of these overhangs for chipping or signs of corrosion. You may need to clean the hub first - do so using a clean, soft cloth only. Do not use abrasives, sprays or solvents to clean the Copenhagen Wheel. Doing so could damage the hub or the electronics within the Wheel. The Copenhagen Wheel is NOT submersible. DO NOT submerge the Copenhagen Wheel in liquid of any kind. If you suspect that any of the retention pockets have structural damage, contact us at [email protected]. Do not re-lace or reinstall a Wheel whose hub shows signs of structural damage.

2. Inspect retention pockets for debris Visually inspect the inside of each retention pocket for debris, such as dirt from the road. This type of foreign matter could damage the new spokes or make installing them more difficult.

INSTALLING NEW SPOKES

Installing New Spokes Once you have removed the original spokes from the hub and inspected the spoke retention pockets for damage and debris, you are ready to install the new spokes. Do not reuse the original spokes. 1. Position hub and rim Lay the included work stand on your work surface. Place the hub horizontally on the stand with the drive side facing up such that the stand surrounds the axle and supports the hub. Position the rim flat on your work surface around the hub. We recommend placing the rim drive side down. You can determine which side of the rim is the drive side based on features on the rim: - If your kit contains a 700c rim, look for a ridge running along the inside of the rim. The side closest to the ridge is the drive side. - If your kit contains a 26” rim, you’ll notice that the spoke holes are a) offset from one another and b)

positioned on two separate flat sections of the rim. The drive side is the side whose spoke holes are farther from the edge of the rim. We also recommend greasing the nipple beds of the new rim to ease tensioning the spokes and truing the Wheel later on. 2. Install drive side spokes Once you’ve positioned the hub and rim as specified above, you can begin to install the drive side spokes into the spoke retention pockets. Be sure to inspect each spoke to ensure that it was not damaged during shipping and that the coating on the apex of the spoke is present and intact. The appropriate spoke length for your rim is given in the table. 26”

STARTING POSITION FOR SPOKE INSTALLATION

INSTALLING A NEW SPOKE

INSTALLING NEW SPOKES

Install each spoke by rotating it into its retention pocket, reversing the steps you followed to remove the original spokes from the hub. Start by positioning the new spoke in the same orientation the original spoke was when it came free of the retention pocket. The spoke should be roughly perpendicular to its final position, with the apex of the spoke sitting in one of the mouths of the retention pocket. Gently rotate the spoke while lowering it into place so the apex of the spoke slips into the retention pocket under the overhang. The spokes should seat themselves in the retention pockets with minimal resistance. If you feel that the spoke is not moving without significant force, try lowering the spoke more before rotating it into place. Repeat until all of the drive side spokes have been inserted into their retention pockets.

After you’ve installed all nine drive side spokes, carefully flip the hub (but not the rim) and place it back on the work stand such that the non-drive side is facing up. The work stand should surround the cassette. Be careful not to let any of the drive side spokes fall back out of their retention pockets as you flip the hub. Install the nine non-drive side spokes using the same procedure as for the drive side spokes. The threads on the non-drive side spokes are pre-coated with orange spoke prep. The appropriate spoke length for your rim is given in the table below. Check the table above and compare the new spokes to the old non-drive side spokes to ensure that you install the correct ones.

INSTALLING NEW RIM

16

Installing New Rim When you’ve finished installing the spokes into the hub, the drive side of both the hub and rim should be facing down. 1. Align rim and hub To ensure that the valve hole is properly positioned relative to the spokes, we recommend aligning the rim and hub before inserting the spokes into the rim. Rotate the rim such that the valve hole is positioned in front of you (i.e., in the 6 o’clock position). Rotate the hub such that the “Superpedestrian” logo is upsidedown (i.e. in the 9 o’clock position). 2. Insert spoke ends into rim Lubricate the nipples with oil. Starting to the right of the valve hole, insert a spoke end into the rim and use a nipple driver to thread a nipple onto it. Repeat this process going around the rim, installing a nipple to each spoke and pulling the rim up to the hub one spoke hole at a time. It is not necessary to install all

of the non-drive spoke nipples before all of the drive side spoke nipples as you would on a traditional wheel. Install each spoke nipple in order and only tighten the nipple by one or two turns. If you have difficulty inserting the last few spoke ends into the rim, adjust the rim by ensuring that the nipples on the opposite side are receded into the rim. If they still wont reach, then the spoke nipples may be too tight; loosen the nipples on the other spokes. Double check that drive side and non-drive side spokes are on the correct side and they haven’t been accidentally swapped.

TRUING

18

Truing Once the new rim is in place, the Wheel is ready to be trued, tensioned and installed on a bike. 1. True the Wheel Mount the Wheel in a truing stand and true it as you would a conventional bicycle wheel. Be careful not to scratch the hub on the truing stand arms when working with the Wheel in the truing stand.

Important: Do not stress the spokes during the build process as you would for a conventional wheel. Due to the unique design and short length of the Copenhagen Wheel’s spokes, the spokes will not stretch. As such, stressing the spokes during the build may cause damage to the hub shell and may void your warranty.

Please note that, due to the shape of the Copenhagen Wheel’s spokes, adjusting the tension on one spoke leg will affect the tension of the other leg of the same spoke. Be sure to adjust the tension in both legs of each individual spoke by the same amount to ensure that the tension remains balanced across each one.

Because of its weight and short spoke length, the Copenhagen Wheel requires a higher spoke tension than a conventional bicycle wheel. A table of recommended spoke tensions can be found below. Also note that certain tensiometer models may not fit between the rim and hub, especially on a 26” Copenhagen Wheel.

FINAL STEPS

Install Rim Strip, Tube, and Tire Once you have trued the Wheel, reinstall the rim strip (16 mm for a 700c rim or 22 mm for a 26” rim), tube and tire as you would on a conventional bicycle wheel. Reinflate the tire, reinstall the Wheel and take the bike for a test ride to ensure that it is in proper riding condition.

Note: If the new tire is a different size than the old one, make sure to update the tire size in the Settings screen of the Wheel app. If you have any questions, please contact us at [email protected]
