The folded 3D MARINER’S COMPASS (approx. 20” square) With Meg Forster December 13, 2014 12-4pm ADVANCED BEGINNER comfortable with rotary cutter use and able to sew an accurate ¼” straight seam. The mariner’s compass pattern has been around for many years; here is an updated version that does not require paper piecing, and indeed provides a 3D effect. The finished 20” square can be finished as a wall hanging, or as a square pillow. You will be amazed at how simply the pieces are put together. If you so choose, you could make a number of these large squares to put together into a runner, or a quilt of a variety of sizes. In class, you will learn the technique to make one square. Batiks were used to make the sample; but this pattern would look stunning in a centrally placed Christmas print, with a few coordinating solids or tone on tones as accents for the backgrounds. SUPPLIES: “The folded 3D MARINER’S COMPASS” pattern – Cheryl Phillips – REQUIRED! 2 templates are sold with pattern. Fabrics for one block: A, B and C (inserts or points) – a FQ of each W (wedges or background behind points) – ¼ yard to contrast with A,B, C Block frame – 5/8 yard Optional border – ½ yard (not used in my sample) 12 ½” square ruler is very helpful (or larger, if you have it) Sewing machine, with foot pedal and power cord in working order; (PLEASE BE FAMILIAR WITH OPERATION OF YOUR MACHINE); rotary cutter; seam ripper; pins; scissors; a roll of scotch tape or clear packing tape; neutral piecing thread; Best Press or Magic sizing spray (you will be working with a lot of bias edges and these help stabilize the edges and decrease stretching). PRIOR TO CLASS: Please read through pattern – it may seem confusing to read at first, but it will become clearer in class with demonstration. It is strongly suggested that you purchase your class supplies at Cotton Patch Quilt Shop to ensure you have the proper items.
