March 2016 My Fellow Knights, It has been an exciting two weeks here at Fairleigh Dickinson! Our men’s basketball team defeated #1 Wagner 87-79 in the NEC Championship Game and were crowned the 2016 NEC Men’s Basketball Champions. For the first time since 2005, our men’s basketball program earned an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament and participated in the First Four in Dayton, Ohio. Despite the loss against a very talented Florida Gulf Coast team, this was a great learning opportunity and growth experience for our young team, who have already set a goal to win an NCAA Tournament game next season. This year’s roster included 13 underclassmen which tied our Knights for the third youngest team in the nation. The atmosphere was incredible and there was not an empty seat in the arena for our NEC Championship Game. Over 2,000 fans, including hundreds of our FDU faithful, packed the Spiro Sports Center in Staten Island, New York. The support of our loyal alumni, students, and administrators was overwhelming and I was thrilled to share the victory with many of you. Your support throughout the NEC Tournament and the NCAA Tournament did not go unnoticed and I greatly appreciate your dedication to FDU Athletics. I could not be more proud of our men’s basketball team. After being picked to finish ninth in the NEC Preseason Coaches Poll, our Knights secured the #2 seed with an 11-7 conference record. The 8-game improvement from last year’s conference record (3-15) is one of the best turnarounds in college basketball. Our team was led by freshman Mike Holloway and sophomores Earl Potts Jr. and Darian Anderson. Potts Jr. was named NEC Tournament MVP and the conference’s Most Improved Player. Anderson and Holloway were named Second Team All-NEC and NEC All-Rookie Team, respectively. In only his third season on the Knights bench, head coach Greg Herenda has put Fairleigh Dickinson basketball back on the national map. Coach Herenda’s commitment to excellence both on and off the court is contagious and he has changed the culture of his program. His student-athletes represent our University with pride in the classroom, in competition, and in the community. I continue to have high expectations for our men’s basketball program under his leadership and look forward to continued success. On Saturday, February 27, FDU Athletics hosted a celebration of the life of Hall of Famer Walter Marusyn. Walter was an inaugural member of our Athletics Hall of Fame and our first cross country and track and field coach. He spearheaded the efforts to start the indoor and outdoor track and field programs and won multiple conference championships in the Metropolitan Track and Field Association. To many of his student-athletes, Walter was more than just a coach. Many alumni were proud to call him their mentor, friend, and even father figure. Walter’s impact has had a lasting impression on the lives of student-athletes well beyond their four years at Fairleigh Dickinson and will continue through The Marusyn Scholarship Fund. The scholarship assists FDU track and field student-athletes. We honor Walter every spring with an award that bears his name – The Walter Marusyn Male Athlete of the Year Award. He will be truly missed. As always, thank you for your continued support of FDU Athletics and I look forward to joining you in cheering on our Knights this spring! David A. Langford Director of Athletics, Metropolitan Campus
