October 2015 My Fellow Knights, Earlier this month, we celebrated the athletic achievements of some of the greatest student-athletes, coaches, and administrators in Knights history at the 17th Annual Division I Athletic Hall of Fame Induction Dinner at the Park Ridge Marriott. It was my pleasure to welcome the members of the Class of 2015 and recognize them for their outstanding contributions to Fairleigh Dickinson Athletics. The Class of 2015 included Dirceu Hurtado (men’s soccer, 2000-02), Jeff Karpel (baseball, 1996-99), Natallia Marchanka (women’s basketball, 2001-04), Aaron Paye (men’s soccer, 2000-03), Joe Rigoli (baseball, 1975-78), Matthieu Savaria (men’s soccer, 2001-04), and the 1984-85 men’s basketball team, which was the first Fairleigh Dickinson men’s basketball team to earn an NCAA Tournament bid. We also honored the seventh Al LoBalbo Award recipient, P.J. Carlesimo, for his selfless service and tireless dedication to college basketball. The past two Saturdays, our men’s soccer and baseball programs hosted their respective alumni games. Over fifty former student-athletes participated in the games. Rumor has it that our men’s soccer alumni beat our current student-athletes 2-1. It is important for our former student-athletes to continue their involvement and maintain relationships with our athletics programs and I was thrilled to have them back on campus. I am very excited to share our most recent updates as we continue to enhance our facilities. The new bleachers at the Naimoli Family Baseball Complex are complete. The bleachers will dramatically enhance the sight lines of the field and improve the overall fan experience at our baseball games. In coordination with The Knights Basketball Revitalization Fund, construction continues to build new office suites for our basketball coaches. I would like to thank our loyal alumni and friends who made these facility enhancements possible. Your generosity towards capital improvements helps ensure that our student-athletes have the necessary resources to compete at the highest level. Our men’s and women’s basketball programs opened up practice earlier this month and have been working tirelessly so far this preseason. Head coaches Greg Herenda and Peter Cinella are proud of their teams’ efforts and excited for the seasons to get underway. Men’s basketball will travel to Villanova for their season opener before they return home to play FDU-Florham. After their Northeast Conference Tournament appearance last season, women’s basketball opens their season at home against Manhattan before traveling to compete in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Women’s Challenge vs. North Carolina, Yale, and Iona. It will be an exciting start for both programs as they compete against some elite college basketball programs. This upcoming Saturday, October 17, Coach Herenda will host a coaches clinic at Stratis Arena inside the Rothman Center. Attendees will have the opportunity to view a team practice and ask questions to our men’s basketball staff. Current CBS college basketball analyst and former Xavier, Providence, and Virginia head coach Pete Gillen will also give a guest lecture. As always, thank you for your continued support of Fairleigh Dickinson University Athletics and I look forward to joining you in cheering on our Knights in the coming months! Go Knights! David A.
