My Fellow Knights,
August 2016
As Director of Athletics, formally recognizing the athletic achievements of the greatest student-athletes, coaches, and administrators in school history is one of my favorite moments of the year. The Division I Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2016 will be inducted on Saturday, September 24th in the Grand Ballroom at the Park Ridge Marriott. I hope to see a jam-packed room filled with our loyal alumni and friends as we celebrate our distinguished honorees. Since 2009, we have honored a recipient each year at the Hall of Fame Induction Dinner with the prestigious Al LoBalbo Award. The award is presented to a person who, like “Coach Lo,” has made significant contributions that transcend competition for the betterment of athletics through selfless service, tireless dedication, and education through sport. The eighth Al LoBalbo Award recipient and this year’s honoree is Naismith Basketball Hall of Famer and former University of Connecticut men’s basketball coach Jim Calhoun. Coach Calhoun’s illustrious coaching career spans over four decades highlighted by three National Championships, four Final Fours, seven BIG EAST Tournament Championships, and ten BIG EAST Regular Season Championships. The Class of 2016 includes four student-athletes who had standout careers in Knights uniforms; Donald Margolin (men’s basketball, 1954-57 and baseball, 1955-57), Walter Michel (men’s bowling, 1966-69), Andrew Nucifora (men’s soccer, 2002-03), and Michael Policastro (baseball, 1990-93). The class also includes the 2005-06 women’s bowling team, which won the 2006 NCAA National Championship. Each of our honorees was a leader on our campus during their career and is a model for our student-athletes to emulate today. Donald Margolin was a two-sport student-athlete and a member of the 1950’s All-Decade Team in both men’s basketball and baseball. On the court, Margolin was named a First Team All-Tri-State selection and New Jersey College All-Star. Walter Michel was crowned the National Champion in men’s bowling in only his freshman year. Michel outlasted 200 bowlers from 55 colleges and was the first FDU men’s student-athlete and first freshman ever to win the National Intercollegiate Match Game Championship. Andrew Nucifora was a centerpiece of back-to-back NEC Championships for men’s soccer and earned NEC Tournament MVP honors in both seasons. Arguably one of the best goalkeepers in our school’s history, Nucifora garnered All-NEC First Team, First Team All-Region, and Academic All-District honors in his senior season. Michael Policastro finished his career in the top ten of three offensive career categories including batting average, doubles, and home runs and boasts a .342 career batting average. Policastro collected three All-NEC selections during his time on campus. Led by NCAA Player of the Year Lisa Friscioni, the 2006 National Champion women’s bowling team also won the NEWCBC Championship and ECAC Championship and compiled an 82-15 regular season record. Friscioni also garnered NCAA Most Valuable Player, NTCA First Team All-American, NEWCBC Bowler of the Year, and CoSIDA Academic All-America honors. Kristina Szalay and Rebecca Ketcham were named NTCA Second Team All-American and NTCA All-American Honorable Mention, respectively, while head coach Mike LoPresti was recognized as the Coach of the Year by the NTCA and NEWCBC. I would like to thank the members of our Hall of Fame Selection Committee for assembling an outstanding class of honorees. With so many worthy candidates to choose from, it is never an easy task to narrow down the field. I believe that the Selection Committee assembled a well-rounded group that showcases the history of athletic achievement at Fairleigh Dickinson University.
