MASTERING CHANGE By: Carol Thiel Spring! When is ever going to get here this year! New beginnings – each season is a new beginning – something different than the previous season. We all face it – we all face “Change” How we meet this change hopefully makes us better than before. Changes, planned or unplanned, in our workplaces, can make us worry about what’s going to happen to our jobs, or it can be a challenge to us to learn something new. In my work life, I have gone through many, many changes. I started out by typing on a manual typewriter – plunking away at the keys, pressing really hard. Then on to electric typewriters – oh my! I kept pressing the wrong keys because they reacted so quickly to the slightest touch. Making copies with carbon paper was also a process! If you made a mistake, you normally had to start all over because it was too difficult to erase every copy and still have it look the way you wanted. Each new step was difficult for me because I was always happy with what I was doing. Computers and technology have made our jobs so much easier. But that wasn’t easy in the beginning. I just couldn’t get the mouse to work the first times I used it. It had to be a growing process. I had to participate and be flexible. Now we are learning a new system at work. Even with computers and spreadsheets to track information, so much of analyzing data was being done manually. I understood how it worked and could gather the information. But, I now know there are better ways – that technology can be used more efficiently to gather that needed information to make better decisions, faster. This is what is needed in our rapidly changing business environment. Again, I feel challenged, I’m learning something new. Yes, sometimes I feel threatened that my job will go away, but I feel good that I can master something new and can move on.
