JERRY, JERRY, JERRY: The Jerry Smith era as 11th head coach in NJCU history begins today after Saturday’s rainout delayed the start of the 2012 season—the 65th season of Gothic Knight baseball. STARTING WHERE WE LEFT OFF: NJCU is starting the 2012 season against the opponent it ended the 2011 campaign. On May 3, 2011, the Knights edged Centenary, 3-2 at DiamondNation in Flemington. Nelson Maldonado tossed the fifth straight Gothic Knight complete game to conclude the 2011 season. It was his third complete game of the season and he struck out seven (walked four) and moved into seven place in career K’s (107). COACH SMITH’S EXPECTATIONS: “To be the best team that day. We are a part of the toughest Division III conference across the nation and we will play teams that are ranked and some teams that are unranked, but in both cases the expectation is the same and that is to be the best team on that day. Our guys need to buy into the mindset that the best team never wins; the team who plays the best wins. We need to focus on winning each pitch and if we can repeat that mentality over and over for the course of a game we will give ourselves the best chance and that is all we can expect.” PROJECTED LINEUP: Junior righty Wendell Rodriguez, who had some brilliant performances last year, including a complete-game 4-2 win at Montclair State on April 29, 2011 will be today’s starter. While the 2012 lineup will vary game-togame, NJCU’s projected lineup for today is: 1. Mike Patterson (CF), 2. Rob Roman (2B), 3. Andrew Rivera (LF), 4. Mike Martucci (SS), 5. Orlando Bolano (RF), 6. Alex Weinstein (1B), 7. Stefan Seguen (DH), 8. Mike Casiano (C), 9. Brian Bustillo (3B).
ABOUT THE OPPOSITION
EARLY START: Centenary plays its first true road game of the season after starting its 2012 campaign two weekends ago. The Cyclones three losses have come by a combined seven runs, with one and two-run loss among them. EARLY TRENDS: The Cyclones are hitting .325 as a team in the early going with its opponents batting .302. On the basepaths, Centenary is a perfect 12-for-12 in steal attempts. The Cyclones however have committed 14 errors in six games and the team fielding percentage is .932. Centenary has scored 14 runs in the second inning and 10 runs in the first and fourth innings so far, but just one and three in the third and fifth frames. EARLY ARMS: On the mound, Centenary has a staff ERA of 7.24—not great but two points better than its opponents early ERA of 9.23. Chris Sisco has probably been the most exciting Cyclone. The senior has 13 strikeouts in 7.2 innings with six walks, but has also allowed five earned runs and 10 hits. ***THE NCAA, ECAC, NEW JERSEY ATHLETIC CONFERENCE AND NEW JERSEY CITY UNIVERSITY PROMOTE GOOD SPORTSMANSHIP BY STUDENT-ATHLETES, COACHES, STAFF AND SPECTATORS.
