Paeroa College “Excellence in Everything” College Comment Thursday 13th November 2014
NCEA Examinations are in full swing with our Year 11, 12 and 13 students sitting in the hall completing their final academic challenge for 2014. It has been great that the large majority turned up well prepared and ready to go and even more pleasing that many have stayed for the full time to give themselves the best shot at achieving successful results. We look forward to the release of these results late in January, 2015. Paeroa College was invited by the Ministry of Education to be one of the schools involved in the TIMSS (Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study) for 2014. This is an international study involving students world-wide in a written testing process. Tomorrow morning our Year 9 students will all be involved in this testing for the first two periods of the day. Should they not be here during that time we will get them to complete the questionnaires when they return. There is nothing that can be traced back to individual students and they do not get individual results. As a College, however, we get a set of results for the whole group comparing us with similar school which should give us some really good data to work from. Over the past couple of days we have Constable Brett Otto in presenting a part of the Police ‘Kia Kaha’ antibullying programme to our Year 9 and 10 students. He has been focusing on relationships and how important it is that we all get along with each other. We hope that most of our students will reflect on the lessons given – wouldn’t it be great if, every evening, we could each look in the mirror and say to ourselves “I have not caused anyone any grief or harm today and neither have I caused myself any grief or harm”. I was given cause to reflect on just how good our students are when, this morning, some idiot on a motorcycle went through our school zone at warp speed, hotly pursued by a Police car (also travelling at warp speed, allbe-it with lights flashing and siren howling). The majority of our students fit in and reach our daily expectations. Most students would avoid any of the behaviour exhibited by said idiot, who showed scant regard for anyone who may have been near the road. We are proud of our students and, with only Year 9 and 10 on campus, now is the time for them to excel. Rod Coe, Deputy Principal.

Year 10 Camp – 2nd to 5th December
Kia Kaha Bullying Programme
The Year 10 Camp to the Narrows Park in Hamilton is fast approaching and there are still a number of students who have to pay. The subsidised cost is $200.00 per student and the full amount needs to be paid before we leave. Camp forms are available in the Student Centre.
Today at school we have had Constable Brett Otto from the Paeroa Police in, talking to Year 9 and 10 students about healthy relationships with others. This is all part of the Kia Kaha Bullying Programme run through NZ Police. They will also be back at the beginning of next year promoting this programme.
Pick Up Sticks – Engineering Style
Picking commercial pine tree seedlings is about to get a whole lot easier thanks to a class of engineering students from the University of Waikato. As part of a third-year mechanical engineering design paper, 10 teams of students were each asked to create a prototype that could collect nine metal pins along a track, then reverse and drop the pins in a box at the end. The process is designed to emulate the act of picking pine tree seedlings. The winning team’s prototype collected and deposited the most pins in the fastest time. The inventions were tested at the Carter Holt Harvey Pulp & Paper Engineering Design Show earlier this week. Winning team The winners on the day were Gordon Jackson (Paeroa College), Ben Plumtree (Hawera High School), Nate Ryan and Mark Edwards (St John’s College Hamilton) with their vehicle named Zeus, which stood out for its speed and accuracy. Gordon is an ex student and Dux of Paeroa College.
This week our P.E. Dept had Jack Clayton in to run through some hockey drills and skills with our Year 9 and 10 students.
