EDUCATION The Northeast Indiana Regional Partnership’s Talent Initiative was provided $20 million by Lilly Endowment Inc. in 2010 to assist the region in the development of education, training and STEM-related initiatives. Since 2010, the region has created eight STEMfocused New Tech schools — the highest concentration of New Techs in the country.

Ivy Tech Northeast utilized $2.6 million from the Lilly Endowment to purchase advanced manufacturing equipment to assist in its efforts to create relevant programs and degrees. The enrollment in academic classes utilizing advanced manufacturing equipment grew 482% in just three years. Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) offers a variety of undergraduate engineering programs including civil, computer, electrical and mechanical engineering, all of which are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET. It also offers a Master of Science in Engineering (MSE) with tracks in computer, electrical, mechanical and systems engineering. IPFW has also enhanced its Wireless Technology and Systems Engineering programs. The Wireless Technology Center of Excellence entered into the first CRADA with a federal research laboratory (the Naval Research Lab) at IPFW, and the Center continues to build a reputation as a center of interoperability in military communications.

The Information Analytics and Visualization Center (IAV Center) at IPFW is very active across disciplines: healthcare information, intelligent systems, data mining, networking and security, software engineering and scientific computation lab. This provides resources for faculty and students to engage in research in visualization, information processing, visual analytics and virtual reality technology. Trine University specializes in engineering with undergraduate programs in chemical and bioprocess, civil, computer, design engineering technology, electrical, mechanical and general engineering. It also offers a master of engineering with majors in civil, mechanical and biomedical engineering. Its unique program offers students the opportunity to simultaneously complete a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in engineering. Indiana Tech is an engineering school that offers cutting edge and high demand engineering majors: computer, electrical, industrial and manufacturing, and mechanical engineering. Just two hours away, Purdue University has consistently been top ranked by U.S. News & World Report for its undergraduate and graduate engineering programs.

COLLABORATION Leaders from local defense companies formed the Northeast Indiana Defense Industry Association (NIDIA) to strengthen the cluster. NIDIA helps develop and improve the local defense community’s ability to develop, attract and retain the required talent; fosters the increased and improved interaction between the defense industry and suppliers from the region; performs as an advocacy group on behalf of the Northeast Indiana defense industry; and is the liaison with the government at all levels to advance defense industry opportunities in the region.

In August 2009, Partners In Contracting Corporation (PICC) established the not-forprofit organization, Procurement Technical Assistance Center (PTAC), for Northeast Indiana. The center is a resource providing assistance with all aspects of marketing to federal, state and local governments. The PICC-PTAC partners with the Northeast Indiana Defense Industry Association with a goal of further identifying and strengthening the defense cluster supply chain.
