#19 DRURY PANTHERS (7-0) vs. #6 WESTERN WASHINGTON (7-0) vs. ST. MARY’S (6-1) SOUTH POINT HOLIDAY HOOPS CLASSIC DECEMBER 18-19 Las Vegas, NV

Radio: JOCK 98.7 FM

GAME INFO PANTHERS VISIT VEGAS FOR BIG CHALLENGES IN SOUTH POINT CLASSIC Coming off a key Midwest Region win on Saturday - an 82-78 decision at Wayne State in Detroit - the nationally 19th-ranked Drury Panthers will put their unbeaten status on the line against top competition once again when they participate Tuesday and Wednesday in the South Point Holiday Hoops Classic in Las Vegas at the South Point Hotel and Casino. Drury, off to a 7-0 beginning for just the second time in the program’s NCAA-II history, will open play in the two-day event by taking on defending national champion and No. 6 Western Washington (7-0) on Tuesday before facing defending Heartland Conference champ St. Mary’s on Wednesday night. St. Mary’s (6-1) will take on West Florida Tuesday before facing the Panthers. LAST TIME OUT Drury rallied from a 10-point deficit in the second half to knock off Wayne State (5-2) on the road on Saturday, the Panthers’ first game away from the O’Reilly Family Event Center. Cameron Adams came off the bench to score a career-high 20 points, while Alex Hall added 16 points and junior guard/forward Lonnie Boga - a Wisconsin-Milwaukee transfer making his DU debut - had 11 points in 18 minutes. Brandon Lockhart had 10 assists and Adams had six rebounds as the Panthers beat WSU 35-31 on the boards; Drury has outrebounded all seven of its foes this season. SCOUTING WESTERN WASHINGTON Western Washington has been idle since a 117-52 win over Quest (British Columbia) on December 8. There is one common opponent between the Panthers and Vikings - Drury defeated Southwest Baptist 73-44 at The O’ in the November 13 season opener, while Western Washington dropped SBU 88-68 in Bellingham as part of its Thanksgiving Classic. WWU is a member of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference and in its first season under head coach and long-time assistant Tony Dominguez. Three starters and eight lettermen are back from last season’s 31-5 championship. John Allen, a 6-1 senior, averages 17.6 points to pace five Vikings scoring in double-figures. Paul Jones, a 6-4 senior, adds 15.4 points and 6.7 rebounds, Austin Bragg (6-9 junior) averages 11.3 points and a team-high 7.0 rebounds, Rico Wilkins (6-0 senior) scores 10.6 per game and 6-9 senior center Chris Mitchell averages 10.1 points and 6.7 boards. The Vikings are outrebounding their foes by an average of 42-27 and are averaging 93.6 points per game. SCOUTING ST. MARY’S St. Mary’s, a former rival of the Panthers when both were in the Heartland Conference, has been idle since a Dec. 8 102-62 win over Dallas Christian, with their lone loss in seven games being a 67-63 setback at home to nationally second-ranked Washburn on November 23. Kevin Kotzur, a 6-8 senior and three-time All-Heartland First Team choice, averages 17.7 points and 10.6 rebounds for St. Mary’s, while Daryell Taylor, a 6-2 senior, adds 13.3 points. The Rattlers are outrebounding their opponents, on average, by a 39-26 count. Coach Jim Zeleznak is in his eight season at St. Mary’s.

DRURY HEAD COACH STEVE HESSER Steve Hesser, now in his ninth season as the Drury men’s basketball head coach, has established the Panthers’ program as an annual contender for both Great Lakes Valley Conference and NCAA-II honors. Hesser owns a 171-71 mark in his time at Drury, a .707 winning percentage that ranks among the top in the nation and in Drury’s storied basketball history. His Panthers have won 21 or more games in six of his eight seasons and won or shared four GLVC West titles in seven years as a league member. Drury has also qualified for the NCAA-II Tournament in five of his eight seasons. Hesser’s Panthers won the GLVC in 2007-08. His GLVC regular season record since the Panthers joined the prestigious 16-team league is 77-34 (.690 winning percentage). Hesser’s teams have been tremendous at home over the years as well, finishing with a six-year mark of 78-13 (.857) in the venerable Weiser Gym before going 26-4 combined over the previous two seasons in the new, 3,100-seat O’Reilly Family Event Center. Overall, Hesser’s DU squads are 106-17 at home (32-4 at The O’), 48-39 on the road, 51-13 in GLVC regular season home games and 36-29 on the GLVC road in seven seasons as a league member for the Panthers.

NEWS AND NOTES PANTHERS PICKED FOR SECOND IN GLVC WEST Drury was tabbed for a second-place finish in the West Division in the Great Lakes Valley Conference preseason poll of league coaches, just behind predicted favorite and defending division champ Missouri-St. Louis. UMSL’s Tritons received eight first-place votes and 113 total points, just ahead of Drury’s seven first-place votes and 110 points. Quincy received the remaining firstplace vote and finished third with 89 points, followed by Illinois-Springfield (69), Maryville (63), William Jewell (46), Missouri S & T (41) and Rockhurst (37). Bellarmine is the preseason East Division favorite, followed in order by Southern Indiana, Kentucky Wesleyan, Indianapolis, Lewis, Saint Joseph’s, Wisconsin-Parkside and league newcomer McKendree. HESSER LUNCHEONS, RADIO SHOWS RETURN Drury will once again host the Steve Hesser/Drury Basketball Luncheons as well as the Hesser/DU Basketball Radio Show in 2012-13. For those who seek another method for in-game updates, we encourage DU fans to sign up for the text message updates to your cell phone under the Panther Fan Central heading at www.drurypanthers.com. PANTHERS CONTINUE HOME DOMINANCE AT THE O’ After moving from one of the great traditional college basketball environments - the historic Weiser Gym - into the plush, 3,100-seat O’Reilly Family Event Center for the 2010-11 season, Drury’s tradition of taking care of business at home clearly has continued. Coach Hesser’s Panthers are 32-4 in The O’ since the move, including a 6-0 start this season. Drury has won its last 12 home games entering a Jan. 3 GLVC matchup with Lewis, with the Panthers’ last home loss coming to defending national champion Bellarmine (84-65) on January 12, 2012. DRURY IN THE NCAA STATS In official NCAA-II statistics released on December 10, the Panthers are one of only 19 remaining unbeaten squads with their 6-0 start. The Panthers were No. 2 nationally in average margin of victory (32.3 points) and FG percentage defense (.350), No. 3 in assists per game (23.3) and scoring defense (55.2) and fifth nationally in steals per game (12.7). Individually, Alex Hall (15 for 15, 100 percent) was tied for the national lead in free-throw percentage, while Brandon Lockhart was No. 1 in steals per game (4.8) and third in assists per game (7.8). HALL LEAVING HIS MARK ON THE DU RECORD BOOKS Senior guard Alex Hall, an All-GLVC choice in each of his first three seasons as a Panther, continues to climb the DU all-time scoring charts. After the Wayne State game on Dec. 15, Hall has 1,631 points and cracked the all-time Top 10 list at Drury with his 33-point effort against Missouri S & T on Dec. 6, surpassing Tom Deffebaugh (1,598 from 1981-85) for the 10th spot. Lonnie Holmes is the all-time scoring king at Drury with 2,341 points from 1991 to 1995; Hall would need to get to the 1,920 points scored by James Bone from 1976-80 to crack the alltime Top 5 scorers at DU. He needs just three points now to surpass Roland Schultz (1,633 from 1971-75) for ninth on the list. Hall has scored in double-figures in 78 of his 95 career games played at DU, having a string of 16 consecutive games in double-digits snapped with his nine-point effort against Arkansas Tech on Nov. 24, when he scored all nine points at the FT line. It was just the second time in his 95 games that Hall had been held without a field goal in a game. He’s topped the 20-point barrier 33 times in his career and the 30-point mark five times, including a high of 36 as a freshman at Rockhurst. Hall added two 3-pointers against Wayne State and now has 291 in his career, No. 2 on the school’s all-time list. Matt Miller, Drury’s current Executive Director for Athletic Affairs, holds the record with 351 made from 1998-2002. His nine 3-pointers in a Dec. 6 win over Missouri Science and Technology established a single-game mark for treys, one that Hall previously had done three times and shared the mark with Miller, current DU assistant coach Steven Gum and Tim Oetting. Hall has made five or more 3-pointers in a game a remarkable 17 times in his career, including a six-trey effort this season in Drury’s 73-44 shellacking of Southwest Baptist at The O’ in the Nov. 13 season-opener. LOCKHART, HALL ALREADY GLVC PLAYERS OF THE WEEK THIS SEASON Drury’s standout backcourt of Hall and Lockhart already has captured GLVC Player of the Week honors this season, with Lockhart claiming the honor after DU went 2-0 in the Comfort Inn Thanksgiving Classic, when he averaged 13.5 points, 9.5 assists, 4.0 rebounds and 4.0 steals while shooting 64 percent from the field. Hall was honored after his 33-point outburst and school-record 9 3-pointers against Missouri S & T in the Panthers lone game of the week of Dec. 3-9. It was the first such honor for Hall since his freshman season, and first for Lockhart since being named the GLVC POW on December 12, 2011. PANTHERS BIG ON THE BOARDS Through its first seven games, Drury is averaging a 38-31 advantage on the boards and has outrebounded all seven of its foes. Dating back to last season, the Panthers have beaten their foe on the boards in eight straight and 11 of their last 12 games. MORE THAN A CAM-EO APPEARANCE FOR ADAMS Sophomore forward Cameron Adams has adapted to his “super sub” role quite nicely this season, averaging 13.6 points (second on the squad) and 6.6 rebounds (team-high) while playing an average of nearly 27 minutes per game off the bench in Drury’s 7-0 start. Adams, who started the final 11 games of his freshman season for the Panthers, posted a career-high 20 points on 8 of 12 shooting from the field and 4 of 4 at the free-throw line in Drury’s 82-78 victory at Wayne State on December 15.
