Junior guard Spencer Barnes provided the excitement last week for Edgewood College after draining a 30-footer at the buzzer to beat Marian 87-85. The victory was the Eagles’ third NACC win, while the team then travelled to second-ranked Benedictine and fell 88-54. Neither team led by more than three points over the final 12 minutes on Tuesday in Fond du Lac before Barnes’ dagger. Marian’s Reggie Roemer hit two free throws to go up 85-84 with nine seconds left before Barnes worked his magic. Barnes put one up at the top of the key that missed left, but a Marian player grabbed the loose ball and tipped it back in play in the corner right to Jim Bridges. Bridges dished it to Barnes well beyond the arc before letting it fly. Barnes finished with eight points while Bridges doubled his career high with 16. Three-pointers from Barnes and Adam Freitag early on against No. 2 Benedictine gave the Eagles an 11-4 lead on Saturday. Benedictine then rolled, going on a 28-5 run that covered most of the first half. Anderson scored eight of his 10 points in the second half while Simon Breunig chipped in a career high seven points in the loss.
About the Falcons CUW has won its last seven NACC games, the latest of which was a 120-110 shootout against Aurora. Keith Kahlfeldt dropped 42 points in the game. Their last loss came against Benedictine, then ranked No. 5, back on Jan. 16. Kahlfeldt scored his 42 on 14-of-20 shooting and is second on the team in scoring at 13.0 per game. Eric Kittel leads and is 12th in the NACC at 15.4. Trevor Krizenesky is seventh in the league in three-point shooting (42.1%). Kahlfeldt is 8th (39.4%).
