Verbal Instruction With input and assistance from the group, students will work to show an understanding of partitioning shapes and comparing shares.

Section 1 : Students listen to the following instructions. 

“Draw a rectangle and partition it into halves. Shade in one half.”

Section 2: Students listen to the following instructions. 

“Draw a rectangle and partition it into quarters. Shade in a fourth.”

Section 3: Students listen to the following instructions. 

“Draw a rectangle and represent which is greater a half or a quarter.”

Section 4: Students listen to the following instructions. 

“Draw a circle and partition it into halves. Shade in to represent one whole.”

Group Presentation Sample Probing Questions 

What is it you were asked to do?

How do you know you partitioned into equal shares?

Please describe to us what section

How do you know if half or a fourth is greater?

shows.

Reflective Closure 

Were students able to work together as a group?

Were most groups able to complete their tasks?

Were students able to verbalize the mathematical content?
