Grand Junction Fire FC Rec Session Template U9 Week 4 April 9-13 Theme: Different Ways to Score a Goal Aim: To improve a players finishing ability, and to give them a variety of different ways from which they can score a goal.

Warm up/technical: create 2 lines on the edge of the box. First line play a give and go, the player then arcs their run to receive a through ball, before finishing across goal. Second line plays a pass into the striker, who turns using their first touch and then finishes across goal. Rotate lines after a few minutes. Progress by: adding a goalkeeper, having the second line turn both inside and outside, add in a passive defender behind the striker. Coaching points: make sure they’re using both feet, encourage them to strike across goal, do players go for power or for placement?

Technical/game related: 2 lines of players, one to the side of the goal, one outside the box. First player outside the box dribbles forward to small cone and stops their ball there. They continue moving forwards and receive a pass from player at the side of the goal, takes a touch and finishes. They then turn to defend, as the player who passed the ball, runs out to recover the ball they stopped by the cone. They turn and attempt to score 1v1. They then switch lines. Progress by: adding a goalkeeper, making receiving player strike the ball first time, allow them to challenge for the stopped ball if the passer is slow to react running out. Coaching points: all above points, ‘shoot on sight’ after turning the ball

Game related expanded: split group into 3, 2 attacking and 1 defending. Defender starts on sideline, attackers on opposite corners. Both attackers dribble in together, defender must choose one attacker to go and defend. That attacker aims to beat defender (ideally using a move) and then shoot on goal. The other attacker must run with the ball at pace before shooting on goal. Attackers switch lines. After 3 minutes rotate the defenders. Progress by: adding goalkeepers to both goals, introduce a recovery defender to chase after unopposed striker. Coaching points: all above points, eyes up to see who the defender is approaching, decide on a move to beat the defender if its you, quick change of pace if you remain unopposed, both players need to attack at pace.

Small sided game: play as a normal game, but put the goals a lot closer to each other than usual (edge of box is used as half way line) Put a healthy supply of balls by each goal. Encourage attackers to shoot from anywhere around half way, aim is to see shots on goal every few seconds. Progress by: increasing distance between goals, must pass 3 times before they can shoot. Coaching points: above points, first thought is ‘can i score?’, is there dribble room in front to get closer and increase chances of scoring, placement or power depending on distance from goal.
