Grand Junction Fire FC Recreation Session Planner U10 Week 8 May 7-11 Theme: Defending: Introducing the Second Defender Aim: To improve existing knowledge of first defender and their roles. To introduce the second defender and their roles
Warm up: ‘British bulldogs’ area 20x20yds. Split into two groups, attackers on one end line with balls, 2 defenders without balls in middle. Cone line in the middle which defenders start on the back side of. Coach shouts go, attackers dribble forward and try to beat defenders. If defenders stop any attackers and get their ball, that attacker now becomes a defender. Repeat until last attacker is winner. Progress by: add rules on later rounds (must use weaker foot, has to use a move to beat defender, cant use a move) Coaching points: pressure and delay attacker, force them towards sideline with body shape, knees bent, don’t stab wait for bad or heavy touch to win ball Technical: ‘pistons’. Area 20x15, group split into fours 2v2. Ball is passed up the channel and closest player pressures receiver, and 2nd defender covers behind them. When the ball is passed, the defenders switch roles, one pressuring the other dropping to cover. Players advance like this all the way down the channel. Once at the end, the teams switch roles. Progress by: letting attackers dribble sideways, allowing attackers to try and beat defenders, allowing defenders to steal ball Coaching points: 1st defender points above, quick pressure if ball is passed, dropping back quickly to cover, communication of who is doing what, don’t overcommit
Game scenario: now play 2v2 properly. Attackers aiming to score, defenders aiming to break up the attack. Rotate teams every 3 minutes so everyone gets a chance to play everyone else. Progress by: if goals are hard to come by allow dribbling across end line to count, if defenders win it they have 10 seconds to counter and score Coaching points: all above coaching points, body between ball and target
Small sided game: area 50x30. Playing width ways with a goal towards each corner. Teams can score in either goal facing them. Defensive teams are to pressure whoever has the ball, but aim to keep everyone else covering. Progress by: taking out goals and ending with free play Coaching points: all above points, good communication from covering players who can see, try to force attackers inside where the cover is
