Italy have only scored two tries in this year’s Championship, the lowest of the 12 competing sides and have conceded 20 tries, the highest of all. MICHELE VISENTIN has scored both Italy’s tries in this tournament, against New Zealand and Argentina. Tonga have conceded 616 points and 80 tries in the history of the IRB Junior World Championships, the highest of any team. This is the second consecutive season that Tonga have been in the relegation play off match, having beaten Samoa in 2010.
Match summary: • Italy and Tonga meet in the play off match that will decide which team will be relegated to the IRB Junior World Rugby Trophy in 2012. Both teams have lost all four matches they have played, with Italy scoring just 24 points in total. They lost twice to Argentina but after a 27-3 defeat in the Pool stages put up a much better performance in the 9th place semi final, losing 12-8 despite scoring the only try of the match. • Tonga have scored six tries in their four matches but lost 30-11 to Scotland in their 9th place semi final and are in the relegation play off match for the second consecutive season, having beaten Samoa 23-3 in last year’s championship. Italy have made just one change to their starting line up from the side that lost to Argentina, with ALFIO LUCA MAMMANA returning at lock in place of FILIPPO GEROSA. There are six players in the Italian side who have started in every match; Props NICOLA QUAGLIO and PIERMARIA LESO, flanker EDOARDO GHIRALDINI, scrum half GUGLIELMO PALAZZANI and centres TOMMASO CASTELLO and GIOVANNI ALBERGHINI. Tonga have made two changes to their starting line up following their defeat to Scotland, with MATHEW HOWLING coming in at flanker and captain MESUI VEA returning at fly half. Tonga also have six ever presents in their starting line up; prop ELISI PULU, lock LONI TOUMOHUNI, number eight SAM FINAU, centre PITA AHKI and wings TONGA AFU and SIALE TALAKAI.

Italy finished 11th in 2008 and 13th in 2009, which saw them relegated to participate in the IRB Junior World Rugby Trophy in 2010. They won that tournament, beating Japan 36-7 in the final to qualify for this year’s IRB Junior World Championships in place of Samoa, who recently won the 2011 JWRT. Have won just one of the nine matches they have played in the Pool stages, beating Japan 24-20 in 2008 and have won three out of five play off matches played. Scored 46.4% of their total points through tries, which is the lowest percentage of any team that has competed in the Championships. Italy have only scored seven tries in seven Pool matches played but have scored 11 in five play off matches. Scored 41.8% of total points through penalty kicks, which is the highest of all teams. Italy are three months per man older than Tonga. Italy have a one cm per man height advantage in the line out and a three kg per man weight advantage in the scrum. Italy’s tallest man is second row forward ALFIO LUCA MAMMANA, who stands at 197 cm (6ft 5ins) and is exactly the same height as Tonga’s tallest player, prop SAMIU TALIA’ULI.
