PANTHERS CLOSE SEASON AT HOME: Having been eliminated from MVC Tournament contention, Eastern Illinois closes out its season this week with home dates against Drake and Missouri State. MSU continues to lead the league and can clinch the conference title with one victory this week. The Bears, who play at Evansville Wednesday, only loss in Valley play came at the hands of EIU, Oct. 4 in Springfield. Senior Recognition Day ceremonies are set for Saturday at Lakeside Field. Jim Adee, Nick Bonacker, Jeff Kupiec, Chris Pearson and Evan Philpott will be honored for their contributions to Panther soccer prior to kickoff. EASTERN ELIMINATED FROM TOURNEY RACE: The 1-0 loss at Bradley on Halloween eliminated the Panthers from MVC Tournament contention. Missouri State, Drake, Creighton and Evansville will participate in the four-team field this year. Next season, the tourney returns to a six-team format with Central Arkansas and SIU Edwardsville set to join the conference. Eastern had qualified for four consecutive MVC Tournaments dating back to 2005, the program’s longest streak since joining the league in 1996.

Shutout Streak at Home: With clean sheets against Bradley, Creighton and Asbury in their last three home games, the Panthers will carry a shutout streak of 313 consecutive minutes into this week’s dates with Drake and Missouri State. Evansville’s goal in the 67th minute of the Sept. 30 conference opener was the last scored by a visiting team at Lakeside Field. Painful SHOWING in Peoria: Eastern played three games at Bradley’s Shea Stadium in Peoria this season and was shutout in all three contests, posting a 0-2-1 record in the process. The Panthers have now played 13 games at Shea since its soccer-specific reopening in 2003. The 311 consecutive minutes EIU has currently gone without a goal in Peoria is the longest scoreless drought during that span... Eastern is now 4-7-2 at its unofficial home-away-from-home since 2003. During that span, EIU has only played more often at Lakeside Field. FOUR SCORE IN NONCONFERENCE FINALE: Eastern got goals from Jeff Kupiec, Austin Andrekus, Ian McCausland and Grey Genenbacher in its 4-0 home win against Asbury Oct. 26, a contest that doubled as the nonconference finale. Kupiec scored his first career game-winner and Andrekus, McCausland and Genenbacher, all redshirt-freshmen, recorded their first goals in regular-season play. It marked the first time since a 2006 win against Georgia State in Green Bay that four different Panthers scored in the same game. Jim Adee assisted on the goals by McCausland and Genenbacher... Freshman Shailer Thomas made his first regular-season start as a Panther and posted his first shutout. Twenty-one of the 23 EIU players on the roster saw action in the win.

HARRISON 12TH NATIONALLY IN ASSISTS: By assisting on nine of EIU’s 18 goals this season, Alex Harrison entered the week ranked 12th nationally in assists per game (0.56). Harrison also leads the Valley with his nine assists. He assisted on all three EIU goals in the victory at Missouri State, posting the first multi-assist effort of his career. It’s also believed to be only the second threeassist game by a Panther in the program’s MVC era (1996-present). Tim Fredin also had three assists in an 8-2 home win against IPFW in 2001. He’s one of 23 players in the country to record three or more assists in a game this season... With 20 career assists, Harrison has moved into second place among the EIU leaders in the Valley years. He’s also seventh in program history overall. Harrison recorded a point in each of the first eight games this season in which EIU scored a goal. Double Goose Eggs Against the Bluejays: Behind goalkeeper Sean Molony’s season-high 11 saves, EIU shutout Creighton for the first time since 1984 in the scoreless draw Oct. 24. Having also blanked Bradley and Missouri State this season, among current MVC rivals the Panthers have now gone the longest against Evansville without a shutout. Eastern last kept the Purple Aces off the scoreboard in a 1998 victory in Charleston. Second Scoreless Draw of the Season: The Panthers have had at least one scoreless draw in seven of the last 10 seasons. Having played both Mercer and Creighton to 0-0 finals this year, it’s the first time in program history that EIU has had two scoreless draws in the same season. Dating back to 2002, five of the Panthers’ last seven scoreless draws have been against Valley rivals.

MOLONY’S SETS NEW SHUTOUT MARK: With his sixth shutout in the Oct. 24 scoreless draw with Creighton, Sean Molony posted a new individual record in the program’s MVC years (1996present). Assistant coach Mark Hansen previously held the record with five (in 2007). The teambest mark during that same span is eight, also established in 2007 when Nick Alexander and Hansen split time in goal throughout the season. The Panthers can tie that record with one more clean sheet effort this year. STELLAR Save Totals: Sean Molony has posted both of his single-game, double-figure save totals this season against Creighton, making 10 in Omaha and 11 in Charleston. Twenty-one of his Valley-leading 68 saves have come against the Bluejays. He also enters the week leading the league in saves per game (4.53). Molony is only the second EIU goalkeeper this decade to post a pair of 10-plus save efforts in the same season, joining Ryan Eames (in 2002). Eames made 11 saves in a win at Evansville and 10 in a loss at Saint Louis... Molony’s 10 saves in Omaha represented the first double-figure save total by an EIU goalkeeper since Mike Sims made 10 in a 2004 overtime loss at Evansville. The other two 10-plus efforts by Panthers this decade includes: Ryan Waguespack (14 vs SMU in 2000) and Jacob Billingsley (10 at SMU in 2001).

SIX SCORE GAME-WINNERS: Eastern has had a different player score the game-winning goal in each of its six victories this season. Mike Picinich (at Central Arkansas), Jonathan Hinds (vs Stony Brook), Kyle Bullock (IPFW), Jerry Maddi (at Missouri State), Evan Philpott (Bradley) and Jeff Kupiec (Asbury) have each scored their first collegiate game-winners this season. This season marks the fourth time in the program’s MVC era (1996-present) that six different Panthers have accounted for a game-winning goal. Eastern also accomplished the feat in 2000 (eight), 1998 (seven) and 1996 (six). Alex Harrison entered the year as the only active Panther with a game-winner in his career.

Finally, the Breakthrough Win vs. Bradley: Eastern finally ended one of the most frustrating winless droughts versus a regular opponent Oct. 18, topping Bradley 1-0 behind a 76thminute goal from senior Evan Philpott. It was the Panthers’ first victory against their in-state and conference rival since the 2000 regular-season finale. Eastern had gone 0-9-1 in the 10 meetings since. Five of the nine losses had been in games decided by a single goal. A 1-0 Win in Valley Play: The Panthers ended a nine-game losing streak in Valley games ending in 1-0 fashion with their home win against Bradley on Oct. 18. Coincidentally, EIU’s last 1-0 victory against a MVC opponent was also against Bradley in Charleston (in 2000). However, EIU did defeat Drake, 1-0, in the opening round of the 2007 MVC Tournament. PHILPOTT SCORES VS. EVANSVILLE AGAIN: Evan Philpott gave EIU a halftime lead Oct. 7 at Evansville with his second career goal. After also scoring the game-winner against Bradley Oct. 18, all three of his three career goals have come in MVC play. He scored his first collegiate against the Purple Aces as a freshman in 2006. Alex Harrison (three vs. Creighton) and Chris Pearson (two vs. Missouri State) are the other active Panthers that have also scored multiple goals against the same Valley rival during their careers... Unfortunately, Evansville scored twice in the second half to rally back and defeat EIU, 2-1, in southwestern Indiana. It was EIU’s first loss of the season that was not in 2-0 fashion. ZUMSKI FINALLY TAKES A SEAT: Junior defender Kyle Zumski’s consecutive minutes played streak ended at 985 when he did not start the second half of the loss at Creighton on Oct. 11. He was the only EIU player yet to be subbed out of a game at that juncture, going the distance in each of the first 10 games this season. Zumski was named the Defensive MVP of Evansville’s Tournament, Sept. 18-20.

FIVE GOALS AGAINST EQUALS CREIGHTON LATELY: Eastern has scored against Creighton, the league’s top defensive team the last three seasons, each of the last three years but still been on the downside of all three results. The Panthers lost a heartbreaker in the final second of double overtime in Omaha in 2007. However, the last two seasons Creighton has scored five goals against EIU. Each of the last three times the Panthers have surrendered five goals in a game, it has been against the Bluejays (2005 in Omaha, 2008 in Charleston and 2009 in Omaha). Tulsa (seven in 2003) was the last opponent besides Creighton to score five-plus goals against EIU... This season’s game in Omaha was originally scheduled to be played at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 10. However, it was postponed until Sunday afternoon due to three inches of snow and temperatures in the 30s. SHUTOUT WIN IN SPRINGFIELD: Eastern posted its first win against Missouri State, 3-0, in Springfield Oct. 4, ending an eight-game losing streak to the Bears at Plaster Field. The Panthers’ only positive result in Springfield as an MVC member had been a penalty kick shootout victory (after a 2-2 draw) over Western Kentucky at the 1998 conference tournament. The three goals at MSU were the most for EIU in a league road game since a 2007 win at Western Kentucky. The shutout victory was the first on a Valley opponent’s home field since a 1-0 win at Evansville in 1998. However, the Panthers did shutout Drake in Des Moines in 2007, but settled for a scoreless draw. PEARSON SCORES DURING EVERY SEASON: Chris Pearson scored his fifth career goal in the victory at Missouri State. The four-year letter-winner has now recorded a goal in each of his four seasons at EIU. He’s the only member of the 2009 senior class to accomplish the feat. Other recent Panthers to score in each of their four seasons includes: Brad Peters (2005-08), Brad Earl (2004-07), Mick Galeksi (2004-07), Jimmy Klatter (2002-05) and Derrick Perry (1998-01). MADDI’S FIRST GOAL: Jerry Maddi scored the first of EIU’s three goals in the win at Missouri State, recording the first of his collegiate career. He became the first Panther since Chad Dumonceaux in 2001 whose first career score doubled as a game-winner in a Valley contest. Dumonceaux scored a golden goal in an overtime win at home against Vanderbilt. Maddi also joined Ryan Child, Jonathan Hinds, Jeff Kupiec and Evan Philpott as active Panthers to score their first career goals in conference play. HINDS STRIKES QUICKLY: Despite starting only three games this season, Jonathan Hinds enters the week tied for the team lead with three goals. In fact, he’s also 14th among the 23 Panthers in minutes played. Hinds scored three times in a five-game stretch from Sept. 18-Oct. 4. His goal at Missouri State came only one minute and eight seconds after he returned to the game in the second half. He scored the game-winner against Stony Brook eight minutes and 10 seconds after entering the game in the first half. He also scored EIU’s second goal in the win against IPFW, but it came 17 minutes and six seconds after he entered the contest midway through the first half. MAKING THE MOST OF MULTI-DAY: Kyle Bullock scored twice and Jerry Maddi assisted on both of his classmate’s goals in EIU’s 4-2 victory against IPFW Sept. 27. The multi-goal and assist efforts were the firsts of the freshmen’s collegiate careers. HARRISON ASSISTS IN FOUR STRAIGHT: Alex Harrison setup an EIU goal in four straight games from Sept. 11 to 27, assisting on four of the team’s eight goals during that stretch. He setup goals by Mike Picinich (at Central Arkansas and vs. IUPUI), Jonathan Hinds (vs. Stony Brook) and Kyle Bullock (IPFW). His four-game assist streak is believed to be the longest in the program’s Valley era (1996-present). Former Panthers to post three-game assist streaks since 1996 includes: Adam Gartner (2006 and 2007), Julian Chang (2001), Casey McCormac (2000) and Jake Spain (2000). TWENTY-TWO TAKE THE FIELD: All 22 Panthers on the season-opening roster saw action in the Sept. 27 IPFW victory, marking the first time this season everyone has gotten a chance to play in the same game. With four goals and seven assists recorded in the win, eight EIU players tallied a point. Goalkeeper Sean Molony was the most unlikely to be part of those eight. He was credited with an assist on Alex Harrison’s game-tying goal in the first half. It was the first goalkeeper assist by a Panther since Mike Sims in 2004. PANTHERS SCORE FOUR: Eastern’s four goals in the Sept. 27 win against IPFW were the program’s most since also scoring four in a Sept. 26, 2008 win at Wright State and the most at home since posting a 5-0 victory against Central Arkansas on Sept. 20, 2008. With IPFW also scoring twice in the 4-2 final, the six goals were the most in one game at Lakeside Field since the wild 5-3 loss to Creighton in the 2008 home finale. NO CORNER: Despite scoring a season-high four goals in the IPFW victory, the Panthers did not have a corner kick opportunity. It marked the first time EIU was held without a corner since the 2007 MVC Tournament loss to Bradley. Since the beginning of the 2003 season, the aforementioned games against Bradley and IPFW are the only contests in which the Panthers have failed to create a corner kick opportunity... Eastern was also held without a corner in the Oct. 31 loss at Bradley this season.
