Math PARCC
Our Learning Math: We continued unit 6. We learned how to reason about composing and decomposing polygons using tetrominoes, created a tangram puzzle and observed relationships among the shapes, reasoned about composing and decomposing polygons using tangrams, and reviewed what we learned. Next week, we will have an assessment to test the effectivity of the piloted program, review the third grade concepts (fractions, area and perimeter, multiplication and division, and addition and subtraction) in preparation for PARCC, and engage in a STEM experiment where students will explore 3-dimensional shapes. Shared Reading: We continued comparing and contrasting two texts by the same author to analyzing the texts’ story elements and discover the author’s craft (RL 3.9). We did this by analyzing Patricia Polacco’s Thank You Mr. Falker and The Art of Miss Chew. We wrapped up comparing and contrasting Patricia Polacco’s books and began analyzing Chris Van Allsburg’s craft of writing by reading Jumanji. Next week, we will read Allsburg’s Zathura and will compare and contrast these books in groups and complete independent practice covering the same skill to prove our mastery in the reading skill. In grammar, we continued to decode multisyllabic words by identifying common syllable patterns for effective decoding (i.e. vowel + silent e, open, closed, controlled r, etc.) (RF 3.3.C). We also reviewed all grammar concepts learned this quarter. Next week, we will continue reviewing all grammar concepts learned in preparation for the quarter 3 ELA outcome assessment. Writing: We concluded our informational writing unit. We learned how to publish effectively and had a writing celebration to showcase our pieces. Due to PARCC scheduling, we will not start our new writing unit, fairy tale writing, until after Easter. Instead, we will simply review grammar concepts learned in preparation for the outcome assessment. These concepts include: inflected endings, regular and irregular verbs, determining the meaning of words when an affix is added, determining the meaning of words when a root word is added, multisyllabic words, capitalizing titles, and using commas in addresses. Science: We began our unit about Earth science, weather. To build knowledge about weather, we learned about the water cycle by pair reading our book with a partner. Next week, we will engage in an interactive PowerPoint discussion about the water cycle. We will also begin to learn about the difference between weather and climate.
