• Alaina’s birthday was this week. Happy birthday, Alaina! • Kelsey will be our star student. Great job for showing excellent character and hard work!
Our Learning Math: We did a year in review involving analyzing data from a variety of graphs, multiplication, division, adding and subtracting within 1,000, geometry, and fractions. We will also took the benchmark assessment to prove our understanding of the concepts learned this school year. Next week, we will be exposed to 4th grade concepts in a unit called Step Up to 4th grade. In this unit, we will work on place value relationships, mental math: multiply by multiples of 10, 100, and 1,000, mental math: multiply multiples of 10, and use models to multiply 2-digit numbers by multiples of 10 (4.NBT.1 & 4.NBT.5). Shared Reading: We reviewed all grammar and reading concepts learned this quarter and applied what we learned in our quarter outcome assessments. Next week, we will continue to practice cursive writing. In addition, we will be integrating social studies into our read alouds by reading I Survived the Chicago Fire and learning about the history of Chicago. We will also be interviewing Miss Taylor’s 4th graders to learn about what 4th grade is like and take away those 1st day jitters. In addition, the 2nd graders will be visiting our classrooms to do the same. Writing: We continued fairy tale writing. We learned how to collect ideas from original fairy tales to give our characters character traits, self assess our writing, focus on characters’ actions around an object that is important to that character (include symbolism), use descriptive language by adding tiny details to the description as they write. Next week, we will continue fairy tale writing by learning how to add tiny details to the description as they write (characters, setting, objects), revise our writing for “magic,” revise for readers so that the pacing of the story is just right, and edit where we find places where they break a pattern or go off course (W.3.3).
