PS 34 Eco-Schools:

News and Updates by Tina Wong “Get to Know Your Dirt” EcoParent Workshop On Monday, March 13, families attended a “Healthy Schools, Healthy Homes” Eco-Parent workshop series with Allison Currier, an Environmental Organizer from NAG (Neighbors Allied for Good Growth). We learned about the history of Lead in Greenpoint and how traces of it can still be found in our soil today. Lead contamination is acquired through ingestion and inhalation, so when you spend time outside with children, the EPA recommends that everyone thoroughly wash their hands, and when they get home, to change clothing and leave their shoes at the door.

For their culimating projects, students were asked to make campaign posters and have people sign pledges to keep our air clean. Will you commit to… using Green cleaning products? … not idling by turning off your car?

In the last few months, our 2nd grade students have been studying all about air. They learned what is air comprised of, the different types of pollution that affects indoor air quality (IAQ) and also the way it can harm us.

Also, start teaching children to keep their hands away from their mouths at a young age, and not to kick around dirt or soil, as particles can be inhaled. Let’s do our best to play safe!

Upcoming Eco-Events:

Teams of 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders work together and follow the engineering design process to complete mission tasks. We’re having a lot of fun designing, building, testing and evaluting our robots in the classroom mini pool. Most importantly, we learned that communication and team work is the key to success!
