ABBOTS GREEN COMMUNITY PRIMARY SCHOOL

NEWSLETTER Friday 18th November 2016 THIS WEEK... Thank you to all the children who entered our Pet Club Competition over the October half term break. We had some wonderful entries from across the school detailing how the children look after their pets at home as well as some beautiful photos...we didn’t know that some of our children have some more unusual pets! This morning in assembly the children from Pet Club spoke about the competition entries and announced the runners-up and the winner! Prizes were also presented to these children.

Many thanks to everybody who supported our school Brightness Day today and raised funds for Children in Need by wearing an assortment of bright and fluorescent clothes...the children look amazing! Collections were made for the charity this morning on the school gates (or during registration for Key Stage 2) and the total amount raised will be announced in due course.

Congratulations to the runners up: Mia in Daisy Class and her Leopard Gecko ‘Storm’ Seb in Orchid Class and his Giant African Land Snail ‘Bob’ ...and to our overall winner Tyler in Lavender Class and his cat ‘Dexter.’ Special thanks to Pet Club for organising the competition and to Mrs Woolford, Mrs Sloman and Mrs King for supporting the children.

The Bury Free Press photographer was also in school this morning to capture images of Brightness Day/Children in Need. Our hedgehog shaped ‘Road Safety’ biscuits that were made at the request of our Junior Road Safety Officers looked absolutely scrummy and were very popular. These were sold instead of our usual tuck this week. Children in Years 2 and 6 headed to Green’s Wood today for their OLE session...and the sun was shining! The children made conker animals, bug hotels and fire pictures using autumnal leaves. This afternoon’s activities include creating Pudsey Bears out of natural materials and den building.

Children in Lower Key Stage 2 are enjoying their DT Day today. This includes a puppet making workshop! Thank you to parents for supporting the school by sending various materials in for this event.

On Monday, Ben Williams from Abbeycroft Leisure joined the assembly. Ben spoke to the children about keeping healthy and the new 5km Walk-RunRoute around Moreton Hall. Please do let us know if your family have tested out the new route!

NEXT WEEK... On Wednesday children in Years 5 & 6 will be transforming the hall into an Art Gallery to exhibit the masterpieces that they have been busily creating as part of their project “What Is Art?” The Gallery will be in the Main Hall and will be open from 3.30 - 4.00pm OLE sessions next week are as follows: Nursery—Thursday 24th November Years 3 & 5—Friday 25th November (includes a visit to Green’s Wood) Please ensure that children are appropriately dressed in warm layer clothing and have a waterproof coat with a hood and wellies. The children will be hearing about ‘Operation Shoebox’ in assembly. The initiative is part of the Samaritan’s Purse charity where families are asked to pack small goodies into a box to be sent to children overseas. Boxes and leaflets are now available from the school office and once completed these should be returned to the school by Friday 25th November or direct to the Moreton Hall Church for the service on Sunday 27th November. Advance notice that the Book Fair will be in school from Monday 28th November to Thursday 1st December 2016 and will be open in the Street from 3.15pm to 4.00pm on these days. Parents of children in KS1 are invited into ‘Show and Share’ in their child’s class at 3pm on Friday. Children in Early Years will be having a Pyjama Day on Friday, Please see the correspondence being sent home via Parentmail today.

A polite reminder to parents of children in Key Stage 2 to provide a healthy snack for their children at morning break time in line with our Whole School Food Policy. Examples of the types of food that are welcomed are fruit, vegetables, breadsticks/savoury crackers, rice cakes, a small quantity of dried fruit and healthier versions of cereal bars/flapjacks. Crisps, chocolate and other confectionery are not permitted as a snack. Crisps are acceptable as part of a packed lunch—however we would ask that these are not included every day. Children in Early Years and Key Stage 1 are entitled to a fruit or vegetable snack provided by the school. Our Whole School Food Policy can be found on the school website (see ‘Key Information’ and ‘Policies.’) The Winter 2016/17 version of “Raring 2 Go” featuring information on what to do in the local area, is now available from the school office. We would kindly request that parents of Abbots Green act respectfully and are considerate of others when using social media. We would therefore ask parents to refrain from negatively discussing children attending the school, or the business of the school in any public forum. If you have any concerns please request to see a member of the Senior Leadership Team.
