After a 2-0 start to the young season in its February games, the Princeton men’s lacrosse team will see March come in like a lion - and this has nothing to do with the weather. Princeton’s next three games are against Johns Hopkins, North Carolina and Penn, who would be No. 5, No. 2 and No. 20 in this week’s coaches’ Top 20. Not that the month goes out like a lamb either, with the next three after that against Villanova (receiving votes), Yale (No. 12) and Brown (receiving votes). That gauntlet begins along with the new month as Princeton hosts Johns Hopkins on Sherrerd Field. This will be the 84th meeting in the series. Hopkins leads 55-28. *

Princeton is 3-1 against Johns Hopkins since Chris Bates became head coach - 3-0 in Baltimore and 0-1 in Princeton. Princeton defeated Johns Hopkins 11-8 last year at Homewood Field as Jeff Froccaro and Tom Schreiber had three goals each and Jake Froccaro and Mike MacDonald had two each. Wells Stanwick had one goal and one assist for the Blue Jays in the game. This year, through three games, Stanwick has 13 assists, or 4.3 per game. Stanwick’s game-by-game numbers so far: 1-5-6 against Ohio State, 1-5-6 against Towson, 1-3-4 against Michigan. Stanwick’s 13 assists are second in Division I, behind Justin Ward of Loyola, who has 14. *

Tom Schreiber has four goals and six assists in the first two games, leaving him with 80 career goals and 79 career assists. The only two Princeton players who have ever had at least 80 goals and 80 assists in their careers were Jon Hess (82G, 133A) and Dave Heubeck (83G, 99A), leaving Schreiber one assist away from becoming the third. No Princeton player has ever had at least 90 of each. Schreiber, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2014 Major League Lacrosse draft, has at least three points in 18 straight games and in 39 of 46 career games. * * * Princeton and Johns Hopkins first met on May 17, 1890, in a 3-2 Tiger win. Princeton lost to Lehigh one week later and then suspended the sport due to “concerns of losing to schools that could not field proper football teams.” Princeton played one game in 1891 and one in game in 1893 and then did not play again until 1921. Princeton has played Hopkins at least once every year since 1937, except for the World War II-shortened season of 1944. Johns Hopkins leads the all-time series against Princeton 55-28, though Princeton is 3-0 against Hopkins in the NCAA tournament. Between 1957 and the end of the 1990 regular season, Princeton was 1-33 against the Blue Jays, with the only win in that stretch a 7-1 win in 1966. Princeton lost to Johns Hopkins 20-8 in the 1990 season-opener, but the series started to go in a different direction when the teams met again that year, in Princeton’s first-ever trip to the NCAA tournament. The Tigers won that game 9-8 on Mark Ames’ goal with 1:44 to go, after Justin Tortolani (now a pediatric surgeon affiliated with Johns Hopkins) scored five goals. Beginning with that game, Princeton is 16-10 in its last 26 games against the Blue Jays. *

The last time Princeton defeated Johns Hopkins at Class of 1952 Stadium was in 2001 as Trevor Tierney made 19 saves in an 8-4 win.

Schreiber is eighth in assists at Princeton with 79, leaving him five away from tying Bo Willis for seventh. With his goal against Manhattan Tuesday night, Schreiber became the 20th player in program history to reach 80 career goals. He needs six goals to tie former teammate Jeff Froccaro for 16th place. *

Senior Brian Kavanagh has started and played the first half of Princeton’s first two games, with a save percentage of .640. Kavanagh became the fourth Princeton goalie in the last 25 years to start a game as a senior after not starting any games for his career prior to that, joining Matthew Larkin (2005), Neal DiBello (1998) and Pancho Gustein (1996). Hopkins goalie Eric Schneider has a 6.56 goals-against average and .667 save percentage. Like Kavanagh, Schneider is a senior in his first year as a starter after backing up All-America Pierce Bassett. *

After a 2-0 start to the young season in its February games, the Princeton men’s lacrosse team will see March come in like a lion - and this has nothing to do with the weather. Princeton’s next three games are against Johns Hopkins, North Carolina and Penn, who would be No. 5, No. 2 and No. 20 in this week’s coaches’ Top 20. Not that the month goes out like a lamb either, with the next three after that against Villanova (receiving votes), Yale (No. 12) and Brown (receiving votes). That gauntlet begins along with the new month as Princeton hosts Johns Hopkins on Sherrerd Field. This will be the 84th meeting in the series. Hopkins leads 55-28. *

Princeton is 3-1 against Johns Hopkins since Chris Bates became head coach - 3-0 in Baltimore and 0-1 in Princeton. Princeton defeated Johns Hopkins 11-8 last year at Homewood Field as Jeff Froccaro and Tom Schreiber had three goals each and Jake Froccaro and Mike MacDonald had two each. Wells Stanwick had one goal and one assist for the Blue Jays in the game. This year, through three games, Stanwick has 13 assists, or 4.3 per game. Stanwick’s game-by-game numbers so far: 1-5-6 against Ohio State, 1-5-6 against Towson, 1-3-4 against Michigan. Stanwick’s 13 assists are second in Division I, behind Justin Ward of Loyola, who has 14. *

Tom Schreiber has four goals and six assists in the first two games, leaving him with 80 career goals and 79 career assists. The only two Princeton players who have ever had at least 80 goals and 80 assists in their careers were Jon Hess (82G, 133A) and Dave Heubeck (83G, 99A), leaving Schreiber one assist away from becoming the third. No Princeton player has ever had at least 90 of each. Schreiber, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2014 Major League Lacrosse draft, has at least three points in 18 straight games and in 39 of 46 career games. * * * Princeton and Johns Hopkins first met on May 17, 1890, in a 3-2 Tiger win. Princeton lost to Lehigh one week later and then suspended the sport due to “concerns of losing to schools that could not field proper football teams.” Princeton played one game in 1891 and one in game in 1893 and then did not play again until 1921. Princeton has played Hopkins at least once every year since 1937, except for the World War II-shortened season of 1944. Johns Hopkins leads the all-time series against Princeton 55-28, though Princeton is 3-0 against Hopkins in the NCAA tournament. Between 1957 and the end of the 1990 regular season, Princeton was 1-33 against the Blue Jays, with the only win in that stretch a 7-1 win in 1966. Princeton lost to Johns Hopkins 20-8 in the 1990 season-opener, but the series started to go in a different direction when the teams met again that year, in Princeton’s first-ever trip to the NCAA tournament. The Tigers won that game 9-8 on Mark Ames’ goal with 1:44 to go, after Justin Tortolani (now a pediatric surgeon affiliated with Johns Hopkins) scored five goals. Beginning with that game, Princeton is 16-10 in its last 26 games against the Blue Jays. *

The last time Princeton defeated Johns Hopkins at Class of 1952 Stadium was in 2001 as Trevor Tierney made 19 saves in an 8-4 win.

Hopkins goalie Eric Schneider has a 6.56 goals-against average and .667 save percentage.
