GENEVA SQUEAKS PAST SVC IN OT, 23-20: Sophomore Huey Ehredt rushed for 155 yards and a touchdown, earning PAC Offensive Player of the Week honors, but it wasn’t enough as Saint Vincent suffered its first conference loss of the season at Geneva, 23-20, in overtime. Senior linebacker Armando Fortunato intercepted a pass and returned it 38 yards for a touchdown to break a 7-7 tie with 5:26 left in the first half. Trailing, 20-13, SVC tied the game as time expired in the fourth quarter when senior quarterback Aaron Smetanka found sophomore defensive back Dan Wirkowski, who lined up as a wide receiver, in the end zone for a 24-yard touchdown to force overtime. Fortunato finished with 11 tackles and 1.0 tackles for loss while sophomore linebacker David Ribero added nine solo tackles and 2.0 TFL.

GAME NOTES Bearcats of the Week: With the selection of sophomore running back Huey Ehredt as the PAC Offensive Player of the Week, the Bearcats have now had at least one player recognized for their performance by the conference in seven of their last eight games (exception: at Bethany, Nov. 13, 2010). Running Loose: With his 155 yards at Geneva, Ehredt established a new singlegame high for all rushers in the PAC this season. His total ranks second in program history behind the 157 yards Mike Kale totaled against Westminster on Nov. 6, 2010. Ehredt enters this weekend leading the conference in rushing with 355 yards (88.8 per game) on 40 carries (8.9 yards per rush). Rapid Approach: Senior quarterback Aaron Smetanka moved into second place on the all-time list with 342 career pass attempts, just seven behind classmate Jake Smith. He needs just 73 yards to become the first Bearcat to amass 3,000 offensive yards in a career. Pick Six: In the second quarter against Geneva, senior linebacker Armando Fortunato picked off a pass and raced 38 yards for a touchdown, marking the first interception return for a touchdown recorded by the Bearcats since defensive back Terry Kernan picked off a pass and took it back 24 yards for a touchdown against Grove City on Oct. 23, 2010. Brockway Bandit: Despite playing with a heavily bandaged hand after suffering an injury at Thiel, Fortunato played the whole game and finished with a gamehigh 11 tackles (all solo), 1.0 tackle for loss and an interception. Double-Digit Tacklers: Saint Vincent has had at least one player post double-digit tackles in six of their last seven games, dating back to Waynesburg on Oct. 30, 2010. Over that span, three different players have posted a combined seven games with double-digit tackles led by senior linebacker Anthony Johnson who has four double-digit totals and tied his career and SVC high with 17 tackles at Bethany last year.

2

Turnin’ it Around: Saint Vincent enters this weekend 0-4 all-time against W&J. In those four games, the Presidents have outscored the Bearcats, 188-53, including 136-26 in the first two match-ups. The last two meetings have been much closer as W&J used a late fumble recovery in the end zone to post a 21-7 victory in 2009 and posted a 31-20 win last season behind a 17-0 start. Overtime Heartbreaks: Entering this season, the Saint Vincent football program had never played in an overtime game (overtime was introduced in 1996 to avoid ties) but has now played two overtime games this season. Both games the Bearcats have lost this season have been by field goals in overtime. Coordinating an Improvement: Saint Vincent has a new coordinator on both sides of the ball and both the scoring offense and defense have seen marked improvements. Under new offensive coordinator Bret Colbert, the Bearcat offense is averaging 32.0 points per game, nearly double the 16.275 points per game over the program’s first four years. First-year defensive coordinator John Thompson has the scoring defense down more than half what it was over the last four seasons as the Bearcats are allowing just 15.0 points per game after yielding 36.025 points per game in 2007-10.
