This week’s tip addresses one of the limitations on out-of-season skill-related instruction.
It is late August and the first week of classes at Radford University. The baseball team has been cleared by RU Athletics to begin out-of-season practice activities. RU’s head baseball coach has a question concerning Bylaw 17.1.6.2.3 (Bylaw 17.1.6.2.2 for sports other than baseball) and its ambiguous wording. Coach wants to send his 4 catchers, Crash Davis, Gus Sinski, Rube Baker, and Billy Brubaker to the baseball field for skill instruction and, at the same time, send 4 outfielders, Davis Birch, Mickey Hart, Miles Dalrymple, and Isuro Tanaka to the indoor batting cage for skill instruction. However, Coach knows to ask before he acts, and he goes to the RU Compliance Director for an interpretation of the Bylaw. Is it permissible to have these two groups of four involved in skill-related instruction at the same time in different facilities?
ANSWER: Both Bylaw 17.1.6.2.3 (Baseball) and Bylaw 17.1.6.2.2 (Sports Other Than Baseball) state that prior to September 15, not more than four student-athletes from the same team may be involved in skill-related instruction with their coaches “at any one time in any facility.” The Big South Conference has interpreted the phrase “at any one time in any facility” to mean that, prior to September 15, not more than four studentathletes from a team in its out-of-season segment may be involved in skillrelated instruction with their coaches, period, regardless of facility. Thus, in this case, RU’s four catchers and RU’s four outfielders cannot both be involved in skill-related instruction at the same time, even though they would be using different facilities.
