TIP of the WEEK

This week’s tip deals with transfers who are serving one year in residency at Radford University. Crash Davis, a catcher for the Durham University Bulls baseball team, wants to transfer to Radford University because he has lost playing time to a kid from Bluefield. Davis is anxious to get to Radford so he can catch for a freshman sensation named Ebby Calvin “Nuke” LaLoosh who has some serious stuff but sometimes can’t hit water if he fell out of a boat. He already holds numerous conference records. Davis understands (because he has already been to several schools prior to Durham, the one-time transfer exception does not apply in his case) that he will have to serve one year in residency at Radford University. RU assistant baseball coach Larry Hockett wants to know what activities are permissible for Davis as he does his one year in residency. Compliance Director Annie Savoy quoted William Blake and gave him the chart below.

**Coaches should realize that this chart is not exhaustive of all the rules as they relate to transfer students.**

PERMISSIBLE Be in any team photos or promotional activities Complimentary student admissions, just like other students at Radford (no road games) May receive a physical May use the weight room (without teammates around) Training room facilities may be used in conjunction with weight room activities. May receive academic and tutoring services

IMPERMISSIBLE Compete or dress for competitions Receipt of participation awards tied to competition (e.g., Conference Championship ring) Dressing in uniform Participation in practice activities at competition site Receiving any expenses for transportation, lodging, food, or entertainment Travel with team

**Post-season note: Transfers serving their residency requirement may not receive any expenses during postseason competitions. For example, the student-athlete (SA) may not travel on the team bus to/from the competition site or sleep in an eligible SA’s room (even if they pay part of the cost of the room).**
