[email protected] FAITH, HOPE & LOVE I want to speak with you on an important matter: death. Death is a topic of conversation some people avoid at all costs, but everyone has to face it at some point in their lives. We either have to deal with the death of loved ones – or they have to deal with it concerning us. It makes a lot of sense for us to be prepared concerning the eventuality of death, and there are some ways to do just that. First of all, I believe it is very important to note that talking about and/or preparing for matters related to death doesn’t mean that we are trying to “rush into it” or “be morbid.” My own father – even when he was in good health – would wince every single time the subject was brought up. My mother actually had to resort to making various preparations without discussing it with him. She even bought burial plots in secret, because if he had known, he would have fought it! You can believe me when I tell you, it’s normal and healthy to be able to discuss and plan for death. One of the very best ways you can prepare for death is to plan out your burial service, in ad‐ vance. Certainly, you should make some arrangements with a funeral home – like the one run by our very own Bobby Kidd. However, if you are planning to have your burial service at Trinity Church (or even if you only want a graveside service) make an appointment to come in and talk with me as well. We can review all of the details of the service, and you can choose the prayers, readings and music you would like to have. Some may say, “Why should I care what happens at my funeral? I won’t be here anyway!” That’s very true, but rest assured somebody will care (probably somebody you love) and if you aren’t prepared, these people will end up having to make decisions at what becomes a very traumatic and hectic time in their own lives. Your choices can be placed on file at the church, and when the time finally comes, I guarantee it will save a great deal of time and stress on the people you leave behind. As far as your “final resting place” is concerned, I would like to point out that Trinity’s columbarium might be a good option if you wish to be cremated. The columbarium is in a conven‐ ient location in the middle of the church grounds and is always left open for those who want to visit, pray or remember their loved ones. It is relatively affordable – niches are only $450 each – and they are now available on a first‐come/first‐served basis to church members. Please see me or any member of the Columbarium Committee if you have additional questions. The members of the committee are: Doris Attaway, Rebecca Culpepper, Dashiell McKay and Mem Webb. Finally, I’m not a lawyer but I believe it is extremely wise to have paperwork such as a last will and testament, an advance medical directive or “living will” and in some cases, appropriate power of attorneys kept in an accessible location. Amanda and I had all of this completed about the time that Joseph was born, when we were both still in our 20’s. And while you are dealing with issues related to a will, it is a great time to consider making some provision for your church within your estate. Trinity Church has been extraordinarily blessed through its history via memorial gifts and bequests. Most churches of our size simply do not have the resources to maintain the kind of facilities or operate the ministries we have. This is very much attributable to the generosity of those who came before us. If future generations are to enjoy the same benefits, we need to be prepared to follow this lead and be equally generous. Yours in Christ, J.D.+
UPCOMING EVENTS ECW POINSETTIA SALE The ECW will be taking orders for poinsettias beginning Oct. 13th 2009. The poinsettias are $20 each and come in four colors: red, white, pink and marbled. They will be ready for pick‐up on Monday, November 30th. Please contact an ECW member for more details.
HOMECOMING AT ST. ANDREW’S The next service at St. Andrew’s will be October 4th at 11:30 AM. Bishop Parsley will be our guest and all of the “Blackbelt Ministries” Churches will be invited. If you are interested in being confirmed you must contact J.D. as soon as possible. SCHOOL SUPPLY DONATIONS Through your generosity we were able to provide school supplies for 15 first graders at Westside Ele‐ mentary and 6 at John Essex. We were also able to provide optional supplies for seven students as well as four backpacks at Westside. Thanks to Evelyn Maxey and Mary Rutledge for coordinating this out‐ reach effort.
