The Little Giants open their 16th season as members of the NCAC. Wabash has won or shared six NCAC titles in the past 13 seasons (2002, 2005, 2006 [tied], 2007, 2008, 2011).
Series Record: Wabash is 11-4 overall versus the Gators. The Little
Giants have won the last two meetings versus Allegheny after losing 20-17 in overtime at home in 2012. Wabash owns a five-game road winning streak dating back to 2005. Raeburn came to Wabash after spending eight seasons at Coe College in Iowa, giving him an overall coaching record of 116-36 in his 16th season as a head coach. Raeburn was an assistant coach at Mount Union College from 1994-1999 working with his uncle, head coach Larry Kahres. Raeburn is 6-1 overall versus Allegheny.
Mark Matlak (Allegheny College, 1978) is in his 14th season at the helm of his alma mater with an overall record of 67-71. He is 3-11 versus Wabash.
Rankings: Wabash remains ninth in the latest D3football.com national rankings, receiving a total of 404 points. Junior defensive back Austin Brown (Griffith, IN/Griffith) earned North Coast Athletic Conference Football Defensive Player of the Week honors for the week of September 5, 2015.
Brown led the Wabash defense with seven tackles, including a teambest five solo stops along with a tackle for a loss of four yards in a 35-3 win at Hampden-Sydney. He also recovered a fumble and recorded an interception with an eight-yard return in the fourth quarter. He helped the Wabash football team hold the Tigers to 84 total yards of offense. Hampden-Sydney gained 21 total yards over its final 11 offensive drives. Wabash surrendered a field goal on the opening drive, then kept the Tigers to its lowest point total since 1999.

Allegheny College Quick Facts
Coach Raeburn’s Comments
“We’ve had some good, focused practices over the past two weeks since playing Hampden-Sydney. But we won’t know for sure what improvements we’ve made until we get out on the field Saturday. Our hope is that these last two weeks have been productive. Defensively we played well against Hampden-Sydney other than the first series when we gave up the field goal. We challenged every yard and made them earn everything. We also did a good job up front on the offensive line. We controlled the line of scrimmage and ran the ball well.” On being ready to play: “Every week you have to stay focused on your team and what you need to do to get better. Allegheny is still a young football team. They have a lot of freshmen and sophomores playing for them. We have a more experienced group of players. We may feel confident going into the game, but if we go in overconfident, don’t practice hard, and don’t prepare like we do every week then we’ll leave Pennsylvania disappointed with the result in the same way we were disappointed with the result in 2012.”
On Allegheny: “Allegheny has played two games already, so that should be helpful for them. Coaches believe the most improvement comes between the first two games of the season. For young guys like the players from Allegheny there is no substitute for game experience. That’s an advantage for them. Offensively they have a more senior-laden group of receivers and have a lot of experience on that side of the football. That game maturity and experience will help them a lot. Defensively Nick Murgo was the Newcomer of the Year in our conference. He has close to 30 tackles through the first two games. He’ll be a real challenge for us. We have to run the ball well to be effective. He’s been a problem for teams to block through the first two games.”
Allegheny Preview
The Gators are coming off a pair of losses to open the 2015 season — a 37-21 road loss at Thiel and a 28-13 defeat versus Wooster in the Allegheny and NCAC home opener. The loss to the Scots Saturday night marked the 13th consecutive home loss for the Gators dating back to 2012.
Allegheny has split the quarterbacking duties between veteran starter Jon Nigro (JR/5-10/180/Allison Park, PA/Hampton) and freshman Logan Lee (6-2/190/Shrewsbury, MA/St. Mark’s). Nigro has completed 17-of-33 passes for 266 yards and three scores. Lee enters the week 7-of-15 for 93 yards with a TD and two interceptions. Tyler Smith (SR/WR/5-8/170/Hanover, PA/Delone Catholic) leads the receiving corps with seven catches for 2015 yards and three TDs. He also leads the team in all-purpose yardage with 309 total yards, cindluing 29 rushing and 65 on kickoff returns. John McFarland (JR/ TE/6-2/225/Whittier, CA/La Serna) owns the only other receiving touchdown for team on one of his five catches through two games. The ground attack has struggled for yards through the first two games for the Gators. Juwan Campbell (JR/RB/5-7/200/Waldorf, MD/ McDonough) tops the totals with 42 yards on 15 attempts with the lone rushing touchdown for Allegheny. In addition to Smith’s yards, Nick Deichler (SR/RB/5-10/200/Berlin Heights, OH/Firelands) has run for 18 yards in 16 tries. Nick Murgo (SO/MLB/6-2/230/Warren, RI/Mount Hope) earned NCAC Newcomer of the Year honors in 2014 with 107 total tackles, the second-highest total in the league. He’s back on pace again this year, leading the Gators with 28 stops, including a sack and 2-1/2 tackles for losses. Matt Wetzel (SO/SLB/5-10/205/Lockport, NY/ Starpoint) has 13 tackles in two games.
