Title? The modal verbs we have looked at can change under certain conditions. One of these conditions is the use of different tenses.

Must ------ Have to… We need to change the modal verb ‘must’ to its closest version ‘Have to’ in all tenses other than the present tense EG: of the WRONG use of the modal verb ‘MUST’:Past Tense “I must get up early yesterday.” Future Tense “Tomorrow I will must get up early” Present cont “I hate must to get up early everyday”

Title? As with the modal verb ‘MUST’, ‘CAN’ also has different tense forms. As we have seen, can is used in the past and present tense.

Can ---- Will be able to, Will be allowed to We need to change the modal verb ‘can’ if we use it as a future modal verb. To do this we add ‘will be able’ or ‘will be allowed’. Note: Remember can has two meanings depending on use…

Title? Using the modal verb MAY is much easier than using other modal verbs. We change the modal verb ‘may’ if we use it to mean we have permission to do something.

May ---- Will be allowed to “I may go out” means you think you might go out in the future. If you know you are allowed to, we change this to ‘I will be allowed to go out.” EG:

I will be allowed to study German as I have passed my final exams I will not be allowed to go on holiday as I got bad exam results
